Mathison hits 14th home run of the season in series opener at Michigan
After Michigan (24-18, 9-7 B1G) scratched across a run in the first inning, Indiana (20-25, 6-10 B1G) answered with single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to build a 3-1 lead. After the Wolverines tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning, IU scored one run in the top of the sixth inning before UM hit a two-run home run to take the lead for good. The Wolverines added three more in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Freshman Carter Mathison, junior Hunter Jessee and redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis all hit home runs for Indiana. Jessee led all hitters in the game with three hits – including a home run and a double – and drove in two RBIs. Five other Hoosier hitters each collected one hit, with freshman Brock Tibbitts reaching base twice via walk.
Mathison hit his 14th home run of the season to move into a tie atop the Indiana freshman home run charts with Alex Dickerson (2009). He leads all Big Ten rookies in the category and added one walk to push his season total to 30 base on balls.
Redshirt-junior Jack Perkins gave Indiana a quality start for the sixth time this season with six innings of three-run work in the no decision. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out seven. Freshman Grant Holderfield (2-4) took the loss with five runs allowed over 1 1/3 innings of work.
For Michigan, Jimmy Obertop hit the first Michigan home run in the seventh inning and drove in three RBIs on the night. Dylan Stanton led off the eighth inning with a solo home run and Clark Elliott's second hit of the game was a two-run home run that padded Michigan's lead with one out in the eighth inning. Willie Weiss (1-2) got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Noah Rennard (3) picked up the save with two scoreless frames.
