
Softball Opens Big Ten Tournament Wednesday Against Penn State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team will be the No. 10 seed and open competition against No. 7 seed Penn State on Wednesday at the Big Ten Tournament in East Lansing, Mich.

Scouting the Opponent
Penn State comes in with a 31-21 overall record and 13-10 mark in the Big Ten. In the final weekend of the regular season Penn State won two out of three games against Illinois, shutting out the Fighting Illini in both wins. The Nittany Lions are led offensively by Cassie Lindmark, who is hitting .399 on the season with 61 hits. Ally Kurland leads Penn State in home runs with 16 on the season. Penn State's top pitcher is Bailey Parshall, who have pitched 199.2 of the 347.1 innings for Penn State this season. Parshall has an era of 1.65.
Last Time Out
The Hoosiers won the opening game of their series at Nebraska, but were defeated in games two and three. In game three the Hoosiers came back from down 2-0 with a Brittany Ford three-run home run to go up 3-2, but fell 5-4 in eight innings.
Bassett in the Record Books
Junior Cora Bassett had a record setting day in the regular season finale. Bassett recorded her 19th double of the season to set a new Indiana program record for doubles in a season. The previous record of 18 was set in the 2021 season by Gabbi Jenkins, who is now a volunteer assistant coach for the Hoosiers. Bassett also tied the Hoosiers single season record for runs scored in a season with 57. That record was set in the 1994 season by Michelle Venturella. Venturella was the 1994 Big Ten Player of the Year, was an alternate for the 1996 Olympics and won a gold medal with USA Softball at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia.

When an opponent has scored two or more runs this season the Hoosiers have responded with two or more runs of their own in the next half inning 17 times this season across 16 games.
The Long Ball
The Hoosiers have set a single season school record for home runs with 56 this season. This is a big improvement from last season in which Indiana hit 28 home runs. The previous school record was 51 set in the 2015 season.
Attacking the Next 60 Feet
The Hoosiers rank 11th among NCAA DI softball teams in stolen bases at 2.35 per game. Tatum Hayes leads the Big Ten in stolen bases with 29. The Hoosiers have stolen 113 bases this season compared to 37 from their opponents. Lindsey Warick has thrown out 12 runners trying to steal bases this season, which ranks second in the Big Ten.

With the Hoosiers 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State on March 19 IU head coach Shonda Stanton earned her 700th career victory. Stanton is in her 24th year as a head coach. Before arriving in Bloomington, she coached at Marshall for 18 seasons and is the winningest coach in Marshall history with 560 wins.
Copeland Freshman of the Week X3
On Monday April 4 Brianna Copeland earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor. Copeland provided fireworks in the Hoosiers 14-11 win over Kent State on March 30. Copeland hit three home runs to become the Hoosiers first freshman to ever hit three home runs in a game and just the third ever player to accomplish the feat. Copeland lifted the Hoosiers to victory with a walk-off three-run home run in the ninth inning of the game. Copeland is hitting .400 on the season with eight home runs.
