Indiana Wraps Round One in Palm Beach Gardens

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Indiana men's golf team finished the opening round at the 2022 NCAA Palm Beach Gardens Regional and is 13th in the team standings. The Hoosiers shot a 20-over 308 at the PGA National Resort – Champion Course on Monday.
In the team standings, No. 3 Vanderbilt leads the field by five strokes after shooting a 3-under 285. No. 40 South Florida (290; +5) ranks second followed by No. 15 Notre Dame (292; +4) in third. Davidson (293; +5) comes in a shot north of Notre Dame, while No. 10 Florida (294; +6) and College of Charleston (294; +6) are locked in a tie for the fifth spot.

• Sophomore Clay Merchent turned in the most consistent scorecard of any Hoosier in the field after shooting a 2-over 74 in the first round. He birdied No. 1 and recorded a team-best 12 conversions.
• Senior Mitch Davis shot a 5-over 77 out of the top spot in the Indiana lineup with birdies on No. 6 and No. 18.
• Fifth-year senior Evan Yakubov shot a 5-over 77 in the first round of play. He opened his NCAA Regional debut with a birdie on the 10th green before also knocking down a birdie on No. 18. He concluded his round with birdies on No. 3 and No. 9 during his back nine for a team-best four birdie makes.
• Fifth-year senior Ethan Shepherd fired an 8-over 80 in the first round. He birdied No. 3. Sophomore Drew Salyers knocked in a birdie on No. 1 before finishing with a 9-over 81 in the opening round.
• The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional site (six individuals total) will advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
