Hoosiers Host Penn State in Big Ten Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's soccer team (2-0-5) opens Big Ten Conference play against the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The match against the Nittany Lions will be broadcasted on BTN+ with Samantha Condra (PxP) and Ryan Canfield (Analyst) on the call and Sideline reports provided by Kate Matthews.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
• Penn State is led by long-time head coach Erica Dambach is in her 16th season leading the Nittany Lions. In 15 seasons, Dambach has led PSU to a National Championship (2015), 15 NCAA berths, 11 Big Ten Regular season titles and four Big Ten Championships (2008, 15, 17, 19).
• The Nittany Lions hold a record of 5-1-1 going into conference play. They have wins against #21 West Virginia, 2020 NCAA Champions Santa Clara and tied 2-2 against #19 Georgetown.
• Penn State is coming off 10-day break and a two-game winning streak after defeating Liberty 2-1 win on Sept. 8. Senior Cori Dyke netted her first career goal and the game-winning goal against the Flames as she scored off a corner kick from Penelope Hocking in the 82nd minute.
• Redshirt senior forward Ally Schlegel and sophomore defender Mieke Schiemann lead the Nittany Lion's offense in goals (6) and points (13). Senior defender Kate Wiesner leads the team in assists (4).
• Redshirt senior goalkeeper Katherine Asman has started all seven games tallying 21 saves, five wins and two shutouts. She has played a total of 600:23 minutes, holding a .778 save percentage and .90 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana, under the helm of head coach Erwin van Bennekom, is looking for their first win against Penn State since Nov. 8, 1996, when the Hoosiers won 1-0.
• The Nittany Lions lead the series 28-1-2.
• The last time the two teams met on Oct. 13, 2021, where the Hoosiers fell 3-0 in University Park, Pa.
LAST TIME OUT
• In the first half, junior forward Anna Bennett had a couple of chances outside the 18-yard box, in the 29th minute, but both were saved at bottom center of the goal line.
• Indiana's best opportunities came late in the second half with a pair of back-to-back shots in the 81st minute.
• The first shot came from sophomore midfielder Sydney Masur as she bounced one off the near post just left of the net.
• Sophomore forward Jordyn Levy was there to clean it up with an open shot but couldn't get it to go as the Tiger's defense blocked it.
• Masur had a second opportunity in the 82nd minute, but once again the Memphis defense held a strong front against the Hoosiers.
• This is the first season since 2015 where the Hoosiers have had six draws in a single season.

• The Hoosiers have shutout six consecutive opponents, extending their scoreless streak to a total of 630 minutes this season.
• This is the second longest consecutive scoreless streak in IU history followed by the 1993 inaugural season where IU shutout eight opponents totaling 720 minutes.
PLAYER PROFILE: JAMIE GERSTENBERG
• Gerstenberg, a member of the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, tied the Indiana program record with nine shutouts in her rookie campaign. She has posted a 10-3-7 record across 1,786 minutes in 20 starts. The Birkenwerder, Germany, native recorded 50 saves in 58 chances (0.862 save percentage).
• Through 20 career starts, Gerstenberg has posted 12 shutouts (plus two combined shutouts), including three-straight shutouts to open the 2022 season. She holds a career goals against average of 0.41, which ranks tops in program history. Indiana has conceded one or fewer goals in 19-of-20 career starts made by Gerstenberg.
• She has competed for both the U17 and U19 German National Teams and was among those invited to camp prior to the 2022 FIFA U20 World Cup.
• Gerstenberg was named Co-Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week on August 23.
RANKED OPPONENTS
• Indiana has seven teams that are ranked second edition of the United Soccer Coaches rankings, highlighted by a couple of top-20 Big Ten opponents in No. 4 Rutgers and No. 8 Penn State.
• Ohio State (No. 21) found enough votes to reach top-25 status, while Wisconsin received votes and is sitting just outside the final rankings.
• In the non-conference slate, Indiana had a contest against No. 12 Notre Dame canceled. The Hoosiers also played No. 17 West Virginia to a 0-0 draw to open the season.
• Since rankings were tracked during the 2001 season, Indiana has not played more than five ranked opponents in a single season. The Hoosiers took on five ranked foes in 2007, 2009 and 2015.
