Indiana Field Hockey Defeats Cal in Overtime by Penalty Stoke
9/4/2022 6:49:00 PM | Field Hockey
BERKELEY, Calif. ––– Twice in three days the Indiana Field Hockey team found itself down late on the road against a California program. And just like Friday's win at Stanford, the Hoosiers found a way to pull out a 3-2 overtime win.
With less than a minute to go in the overtime period, Cal committed a foul in the circle to give Indiana's Anna Mozeleski a chance to win it via penalty stroke. The freshman did just that, sending it to the left side of the keeper, and securing a victory.
The Hoosiers are now 2-2 on the season, and winners of two games in a row.
KEY MOMENTS
• At the end of the first half, both sides were scoreless, with Indiana leading in shots taken, 2-1.
• California's Hanna Winn and Sara Stone each scored a goal within the first five minutes of the second half to give Cal a 2-0 lead that would last through the entire third quarter.
• In the 48th minute, junior Jemima Cookson scored her first goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game, on an assist from redshirt junior Sydney Keld.
• In the 54th minute, with six minutes left of regulation, Cookson scored another goal to even the game at 2-2, courtesy of freshman Kai Snell's assist.
• At the end of the fourth period, with 12 seconds to spare, Cal fired a shot but Keld made a key defensive save to keep the game tied and send it to overtime.
• In overtime, Mozeleski fired a shot past the keeper's left side in the cage for the game-winning goal via penalty stroke.
