BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore forward Tommy Mihalic's 49th-minute half-bicycle kick goal was enough to earn the 11th-ranked Indiana men's soccer team (1-1-1) a 1-0 win over St. John's (1-3-0) Tuesday (Sept. 6) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Red Storm had the advantage in shots (St. John's 11, IU 9) and corners (St. John's 6, IU 4), mostly coming after Mihalic's score. Indiana's back line held firm, though, to earn its first clean sheet of the young season.
KEY MOMENTS
• 30' – Indiana dominated in the early going, earning five shots and three corners in the opening half. After sitting back, St. John's countered late in the first 45 minutes to win a few opportunities before the clock struck zero, tied at zero.
• 49' – Redshirt junior midfielder Quinten Helmer's shot deflected into Mihalic's path about 12 yards from goal. The sophomore twisted his body around the ball and bounced it into the side netting to open the scoring.
• 54' – Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bryant Pratt made a fantastic save to deny a one-on-one opportunity but was shaken up on the play. With Pratt unable to continue, the Hoosiers turned to junior JT Harms for the remainder of the match.
• 56' – Harms was immediately challenged with a header on goal from short range. The substitute was well-positioned and made one of his three saves on the night.
NOTABLES
• Indiana is undefeated in its last 11 home matches, owning a 10-0-1 record during that span.
• IU now has a winning record against St. John's, improving to 4-3-2 all-time. The Hoosiers are undefeated in the last four matches of the series, going 2-0-2 in that span. IU's two goals in two, 1-0 victories are the lone scores within those four matches.
• With Tuesday's victory, Indiana men's soccer earned its 795th win all-time, putting the program five wins away from 800. In the program's 50th season, the Hoosiers are 795-190-106 (.778).
• Mihalic scored his second goal in as many matches, and second of the season, following his penalty a week ago versus Portland. The sophomore has tallied seven goals in his young career.
• Helmer earned his first-career assist and point on Mihalic's goal after his shot fell to his teammate.
UP NEXT
Indiana will complete the homestand Friday (Sept. 9) when the Hoosiers host No. 10 Akron at Armstrong Stadium.
