BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The 11th-ranked Indiana men's soccer team (1-1-1) will welcome 2021 NCAA Tournament team and ninth-ranked Akron (4-0-0) Friday (Sept. 8) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The match will be streamed live on the Big Ten Plus digital platform with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET.
IU will honor members of its 2012 NCAA National Championship team with a pregame ceremony right before kickoff. 2022 marks 10 years since the program won its eighth star.
Friday night is IU Dance Marathon's For the Kicks Night, as IUDM and the Indiana men's soccer program will host a pregame tailgate beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Additionally, the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free IUMS supporter scarf and a limited edition 2012 NCAA Championship poster.
SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana will close a three-match homestand, a slate that has featured three teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season. IU's final foe in that stretch will be Akron, a team ranked as high as No. 9 this week and that comes into the match with a 4-0-0 record.
• IU owns a 346-69-50 record all-time at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers are undefeated in 11 straight home matches, going 10-0-1 in that span.
• Sophomore Tommy Mihalic has scored two goals in IU's last two matches.
ABOUT THE ZIPS
• Akron comes into the match with a 4-0-0 record. The Zips are fresh off a 2-0 win over Big Ten opponent Michigan State.
• In 2021, Akron owned a 9-6-3 record and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Zips faced Santa Clara in the first round and fell, 2-1, in double overtime.
• The Zips are led by 10th-year head coach Jared Embick. Embick has compiled a 117-50-20 record at Akron.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana has dominated the all-time series with Akron, owning a 25-7-3 record against the Zips.
• IU and Akron met nearly a year ago to the day (Sept. 10, 2021) in a top-20 matchup and played to a 1-1, double overtime draw. Now-redshirt senior Daniel Munie scored a header for Indiana in the 66th minute before the Zips equalized two minutes later.
• The two teams have met seven times in the NCAA Tournament, with the Hoosiers prevailing in five of those matches.
