1/26/2023 11:30:00 AM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The final weekend of January will welcome some of the Midwest's best programs to Bloomington for the IU Relays.
A heavy distance weekend for the Hoosiers will also see its top competitors compete in the Throws, Pole Vault and Sprints. The majority of IU's jumps group will be in Lubbock, Texas competing at the Texas Tech Open.
After handing a weekend of rest to some of the top athletes on the team, the likes of Sean Mockler, Jayden Ulrich, Camden Marshall and Jake Gebhardt will return to action. Sarah Schmitt and Gabriel Sanchez will make their return to running after a successful Cross Country season.
Friday's events will begin at 5:00 PM EST with Saturday's action starting at 11:15 AM EST.
The Weekend Ahead:
IU will host the second of back-to-back meets this weekend with the Indiana Relays inside Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The Hoosiers' top jumpers will head to Texas Tech this weekend in search of NCAA-qualifying marks.
Paola Fernandez-Sola, Alex Smith, Hope Purcell and Robert Blue will all compete in the Long Jump. Mahogany Jenkins and Grayson Rolen will also appear in Lubbock.
Sarah Schmitt and Gabriel Sanchez return to action for the first time in 2023 and are set to compete in the Mile and 3000 meters.
The 3000 meters will be one of the most hotly contested events of the weekend with Schmitt, Sanchez, Jake Gebhardt, Camden Marshall, Maddie Dalton and Jenna Barker all set to run.
Antonio Laidler will lead a contingent of sprinters this weekend in the 60 meters and 200 meters. Trelee Banks and Ray Brodie will also compete in both events with Christopher Grant set to run in the 60 meters.
Alyssa Robinson will double back to run the 200 meters and 400 meters before taking a leg on IU's 4x400 relay team.
Parker Raymond and Maddie Russin will both run the 600 meters and 800 meters. Andrew Anderson, Keefer Soehngen and Nico Colchico are among those entered into the middle-distance events.
All six pole vaulters will be in action once again with Nathan Stone and Jessica Mercier already putting their names at the top of the Big Ten in the early portion of the season.
The Hoosiers will compete in the DMR on the men's side and 4x400 relay on both the women's and men's side.
Sean Mockler, Jayden Ulrich, Makayla Hunter and Noah Koch will all be back in the ring to throw. Ulrich and Hunter will throw the Shot Put and the men are set to contest the Weight Throw.
News and Notes:
Following a strong Cross Country season that saw him finish top-25 in the Big Ten, sophomore Camden Marshall has continued that success on the track. The Big Ten Indoor Champion at 800 meters last year, he opened the season by besting the school record in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:21.64.
To follow that up, Marshall joined the elite sub 4-minute mile club at IU alongside teammate Jake Gebhardt, crossing the line in 3:59.30 to move into 10th all-time in program history.
Already one of the best pole vaulters in program history, Nathan Stone has started to challenge for the best marks ever seen by a Hoosier.
He has opened the season by winning the first three meets in convincing fashion and has attempted for PR's every time before falling just short.
Already a three-time Big Ten Champion, Stone has big plans for his senior season in 2023.
Jenna Barker has gotten off to a blazing start in her final season for IU.
Across the first three meets, she's set personal bests in the 800 meters (2:08.91), Mile (4:42.74) and 3000 meters (9:30.55) and is currently the Big Ten leader in the Mile.
Antonio Laidler has been busy for the Hoosiers in the early portions of the season and is off to a strong start.
He won the 60 meters and 200 meters at the Gladstein Invitational and ran on the 4x400 relay team.
He owns season's bests of 6.73 and 21.50 in the early portions of the season and has the potential to run on the 4x400 relay teams and Distance Medley Relay teams.
