Men’s Soccer Looks Forward to Decisive Sunday
10/28/2023 12:12:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana men's soccer (8-4-4, 3-2-2 B1G) will host Rutgers (5-6-3, 3-3-1 B1G) Sunday (Oct. 28) on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong in a decisive regular season finale that holds implications for the Big Ten regular season title as well as Big Ten Tournament seeding.
Fans can watch the match on the Big Ten Plus digital platform. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET (originally scheduled for 1 p.m.).
With a win Sunday, Indiana can clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title if Penn State and Northwestern both drop points (lose or tie) in their respective matches. If Indiana wins and both Penn State and Northwestern lose, the Hoosiers will win the title outright.
With how tight the Big Ten has been, truly no result is outside the realm of possibility. There have been 10 ties this season, and all but one of the teams still to play Sunday (Michigan State is off) has lost at least twice this season. IU can finish anywhere between No. 1 and No. 6 in the Big Ten Tournament seeding depending on Sunday's results.
On Monday, IU men's soccer announced important gameday updates for Sunday's match. First, the game will not be ticketed, and fans can attend the match for free. Additionally, due the 1 p.m. start time for the IU men's basketball exhibition game against Indianapolis, the normal parking opportunities for home IU men's soccer matches will not be available Sunday. If you are attending the men's soccer match, gameday parking will be available at:
KICKING OFF
• Indiana has won a league-best 17 Big Ten regular season title and 32 conference championships overall.
• IU owns a 6-1-2 record at Bill Armstrong Stadium this year, keeping seven clean sheets in nine matches.
ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
• Rutgers owns a 5-6-3 record, 3-3-1 mark in Big Ten play and is 1-5-1 in road matches.
• The Scarlet Knights are led by fifth-year head coach Jim McElderry, who owns a 35-29-15 during his time in Piscataway and a 162-154-62 record over 21 seasons as a head coach.
• Graduate midfielder Jackson Temple leads Rutgers in all three offensive categories with six goals, four assists and 16 points.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana has won 11 of the 17 meetings between the Hoosiers and Scarlet Knights, owning an 11-4-2 record in the series.
• The teams met twice last season, both times in Piscataway. In the regular season, IU and Rutgers played to a 2-2 draw. They met again in the Big Ten Tournament final, in which the Scarlet Knights won the program's first tournament crown from a 3-1 result.
• The last time Rutgers visited Bill Armstrong Stadium was in the 2021 tournament when a 27th-minute Samuel Sarver goal was enough to push IU through to the semifinal.
