WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The 2023 Indiana men's soccer season has been a story of resilience, and the Hoosiers needed courage once again Sunday (Nov. 19) in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at No. 10 national seed Wake Forest.
Down 1-0 and 2-1, IU equalized twice before scoring an overtime winner to beat the Demon Deacons 3-2 on their home patch. With the victory, the Hoosiers advance to their ninth straight round of 16, extending the nation's longest active streak, and will play No. 7 national seed Virginia next weekend in Charlottesville.
Indiana led in shots 22-12, corners 13-3 and after 94 minutes, goals 3-2. Senior midfielder Hugo Bacharach delivered the first equalizer in the 54th minute as well as the winner in overtime, a behind-the-back flick into goal from a free-kick. Senior forward Karsen Henderlong had IU's second equalizer on the 73rd minute.
KEY MOMENTS
• 9' – Junior Tommy Mihalic had the first big chance of the match, cutting inside from the left wing, firing a shot to the back post and forcing a save.
• 21' – Indiana was unlucky to concede the first goal as an intended cross was deflected off the foot of senior defender Jansen Miller, over senior goalkeeper JT Harms and into goal.
• 38' – Close to the half, IU had its first chance to equalizer when a cross came to junior Samuel Sarver in the box, but he sent his shot just high.
• 49' – Out of the break, Mihalic had another chance saved, cutting in again from the left.
• 54' – Bacharach and IU equalized as he headed from a corner sent in by junior Patrick McDonald.
• 67' – Wake Forest retook the lead 12 minutes later from the spot. Wake Forest junior Roald Mitchell got ahead of the last defender in transition and was taken down in the box by Harms. Sophomore midfielder Vlad Walent converted the penalty kick.
• 73' – Henderlong was the hero in the 73rd, crashing the box to score a saved effort. Freshman Collins Oduro hit a shot from distance that deflected off senior Maouloune Goumballe and into Wake Forest senior keeper Trace Alphin. Alphin couldn't handle it, and Henderlong punched it in.
• 94' – Four minutes into overtime, Indiana won a free kick near midfield. McDonald provided the assist again as Bacharach contorted his body and acrobatically flicked the ball with his heel into goal for the winner.
