BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Three Indiana men's soccer student-athletes – senior defenders Hugo Bacharach and Joey Maher as well as junior midfielder Patrick McDonald – were selected during the 2024 MLS SuperDraft Tuesday (Dec. 19) evening.
Bacharach was selected No. 9 overall by Minnesota United FC. His selection marks the seventh consecutive season that Indiana has produced a top-10 pick, the longest active streak in the NCAA.
Indiana has produced 63 MLS selections combining 51 SuperDraft selections, eight homegrown contracts and four supplemental draft picks. Since Todd Yeagley's first season as IU's head coach in 2010, 25 players have been drafted – including 12 in the first round – eight have signed homegrown contracts and three have been taken in the supplemental draft.
Bacharach played one season at Indiana after transferring from Fairleigh Dickinson. The senior started the year playing center back and shifted into a defensive midfield role midseason that helped spark IU's late-season success. The dynamo scored four goals and had four assists, and the Hoosiers won 12 of their last 14 matches to capture the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and advance to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
At Fairleigh Dickinson, Bacharach was a first-team All-Northeast Conference performer all three seasons. In his final season at FDU, he was named the NEC Defender of the Year and earned a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-Northeast Region selection as a junior.
Toronto FC opened the second round selecting Maher with the No. 30 overall pick. A four-year starter, Maher was in the first XI in 83 of 85 matches played. In those games, Indiana totaled 40 clean sheets and, in each of his four seasons, the Hoosiers ranked top-11 nationally in shutouts. Over the four years, Maher appeared in two NCAA College Cup finals and won four Big Ten Championships (two tournament, two regular season).
Maher captained Indiana to nine shutouts in 2023, tied for the 10th most in the country. He was named first-team All-Big Ten and United Soccer Coaches first-team All-Region and first-team Scholar All-America.
It was Toronto again with the first pick of the third round picking McDonald No. 59 overall. McDonald was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023, tallying three goals and five assists. The junior has a year of eligibility remaining and could be drafted again next year should he choose to return to Indiana for his senior season.
