SOUTH BEND, Ind. — It took penalty kicks to end the Indiana men's soccer season as the Hoosiers fell by the closest of margins Saturday (Dec. 2) night at Alumni Stadium in their NCAA-record 29th NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal appearance.
The resilient Hoosiers came back from conceding a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute to equalize in the 63rd. Despite outshooting the Fighting Irish 25-11, after two 10-minute overtime periods the match went to a penalty shootout, where the hosts made each attempt and won 5-4. Indiana finished with a 15-4-5 record despite a 3-3-4 start to the year – beginning with an October 7 win at Penn State, the Hoosiers won 12 of 14 in the second half of the season. Thanks to its hot streak, Indiana won its 12th Big Ten Double, sharing the conference regular season title with Penn State before beating them in the tournament final.
"It hurts more because you invest more," IU head coach Todd Yeagley said after the match.
KEY MOMENTS
• 17' – After back-and-forth play in the early going, Notre Dame took the lead from a free-kick about 20 yards away from goal. Senior forward Daniel Russo scored, curling it away from senior goalkeeper JT Harms with his left foot.
• 19' – Junior Tommy Mihalic created chance after chance for IU in the first half, including a shot on frame moments after the opening goal. Mihalic cut onto his right and curled it towards the top-right corner, but the Notre Dame keeper leapt to grab it.
• 24' – Mihalic had another great chance five minutes late but pushed it just wide.
• 63' – Junior Patrick McDonald got the Hoosiers level late with a rocket from outside the box. A cross was cleared but came to his feet 23 yards out. He took a touch and fired into the side netting to make it 1-1.
• 69' – Harms made a crucial save as a shot in transition from Notre Dame junior Matthew Roou forced him to his left.
• 89' – IU was inches away from a winner in the final moments of regulation. Junior Samuel Sarver's shot from distance clanged down from the crossbar. IU got it back from the clearance, and senior forward Karsen Henderlong fired across the six towards two Hoosiers, neither of whom could get a touch on it.
• 97' – In the first overtime, another cross from Henderlong came to the other flank to Sarver, whose first-time attempt was deflected over. The resulting corner came to senior defender Joey Maher, but his shot was also high.
• 99' – In the final moments of the first overtime period, Notre Dame got another free-kick just yards away from where it had scored its first. Russo's second attempt went just high.
• 102' – Many Hoosiers thought they had their winner when a shot from senior forward Maouloune Goumballe was deflected, sending the keeper the wrong way. To many, it looked like it would nestle into the corner, but it rolled to the end-line within feet of the post.
• 110' – Indiana's first attempt in the penalty shootout hit the post, and Notre Dame made the Hoosiers pay, scoring all five of their shots.
NOTABLES
