Big Ten Play Begins On Saturday For No. 16 Indiana At Rutgers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A quest for a Big Ten championship begins on Saturday afternoon when No. 16 IU opens up league play at Rutgers. Tip at Jersey Mike's Arena is set for 4 p.m. ET on BTN.

Rutgers improved to 6-5 and are on a three-game win streak with a 98-67 victory over LaSalle on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Kaylene Smikle leads the Scarlet Knights with 16.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while junior guard Destiny Adams adds 13.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing. They are averaging 71.0 points per game and shooting 43.9 percent from the floor.

NOTES
- This is the first time in four years that the Hoosiers will play at Rutgers. A prior meeting on Dec. 30, 2021 scheduled for Piscataway was canceled due to COVID 19. They last played in Jersey Mike's Arena on Dec. 31, 2019.
- IU has won four-straight in the series with the Scarlet Knights, which dates back to Dec. 31, 2019.
- The team will play its only Big Ten game prior to the upcoming holidays and will resume conference play on Dec. 31 at home against Illinois.
- In Big Ten openers, Indiana is 19-21 all-time but have won its last five league openers dating back to the 2018-19 season. It is also starting on the road for the first time in five seasons, which coincides with the start of the winning streak when it defeated Illinois in overtime. Indiana and Rutgers are meeting in the B1G opener for the first time since the 2014-15 season in which then No. 17/18 Rutgers won, 66-51, in Bloomington.
- With a win on Saturday, Indiana head coach Teri Moren can notch her 100th Big Ten victory. She currently holds a 99-57 all-time conference record as she goes into her 10th season with the program. Additionally, Moren is the program's all-time win leader overall (207) and in Big Ten play (99).
- Graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes scored a team-high 17 points and sophomore guard Yarden Garzon added 14 points as No. 17 Indiana defeated Stetson, 72-34. The Hoosiers limited its foe to just 19.4 percent shooting and just 12.5 percent from beyond the arc.
- Holmes was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week honor roll for her efforts in games against Stetson and Maine in the previous week. She averaged 19.5 points while shooting 80 percent from the floor along with 5.0 rebound and 2.0 blocks per game in two wins.
- Indiana is currently led by three double figure scorers in Holmes (18.3 ppg., 6.4 rpg.), senior guard Sara Scalia (16.5 ppg.) and sophomore guard Yarden Garzon (11.5 ppg.).
