ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana will have 14 final swims on the last night of the 2023 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday (Feb. 18) inside Canham Natatorium.
In addition, Indiana sophomores Mariah Denigan and Ching Hwee Gan are set to swim the final heat of the 1,650 free, which will officially kick off Saturday night's session. Gan owns the fastest time in the Big Ten this season at 16:05.69, while Denigan ranks No. 3 at 16:08.72.
Indiana added a pair of finalists in the platform diving event as sophomore Skyler Liu (324.65) and junior Anne Fowler (262.00) advanced from their prelim in the afternoon. Fowler and Liu are the only athletes to advance to all three diving A finals this week.
Having already earned five medals this meet, sophomore Anna Peplowski has a great opportunity to earn another as the top qualifier in the 200-yard backstroke. Peplowski (1:52.46) and freshman Mya DeWitt (1:54.64) finished back-to-back in the fifth heat of the prelim session as the rookie beat her previous best (1:56.52) by nearly two seconds.
Peplowski's sister, senior Noelle Peplowski, earned the No. 2 seed in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing 1-2 in the sixth heat with fellow championship-final qualifier and sophomore Brearna Crawford (2:10.05). The senior Peplowski went 2:08.42 in the morning and will look to approach her career-best 2:05.52 that she set midseason this evening. Crawford and Peplowski went 1-2, respectively, in last year's championship, earning the program's sixth title in seven seasons in the event.
In the 100 free, freshman Kristina Paegle (48.45) and senior Ashley Turak (48.67) reached the A final as the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. Freshman Katie Forrester rounded out IU's A finalists, going 1:57.75 in the 200 fly. Indiana had five more swimmers reach consolation heats.
