GENEVA, Ohio - Behind a pair of silver medal performances and a trio of bronze medal performances on Saturday, the Hoosiers earned 4th and 5th place finishes for the men and women respectively at the 2023 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
A total of 79 points, scored across 12 events, earned the IU men a top-four finish for the seventh-consecutive season. Nathan Stone and Tyler Carrel combined to provide 14 points in the Pole Vault while Austin Haskett and Dustin Horter gave 10 to the team tally in the Mile.
On the women's side, IU scored 68.5 points for fifth, the highest finish as a team since 2020. The women have finished fifth or better in five of the last eight seasons.
14 points in the Long Jump, 10 in the Pentathlon and nine from Sarah Schmitt and Jenna Barker in the 3000 meters gave IU a much-needed boost to edge Penn State for a top-five finish.
Grayson Rolen opened Saturday's affairs with a thrilling series in the High Jump. He cleared on his final attempt at three-straight bars (2.06m/6-9, 2.09m/6-10.25 and 2.12m/6-11.5) to finish fourth. The clearance at 2.12m/6-11.5 was an indoor personal best to score five points for the team.
Noah Koch scored his first points at a Big Ten meet with a sixth-place finish in the Shot Put. After narrowly missing the Weight Throw final yesterday, Koch responded with a mark of 18.24m/59-10.25 on his opening attempt to score three points.
Haskett and Horter navigated a strategic final in the Mile to finish third and fifth respectively with times of 4:13.85 and 4:14.93 respectively. Haskett broke away with the lead pack on the backstretch and used a big effort to take Bronze.
Haskett's third-place finish marked the first individual points scored at a Big Ten meet in his career.
Antonio Laidler provided 13 points on the afternoon, finishing second in the 60 meters (6.69) and fourth at 200 meters (20.97). His time in the 200 meters makes him the third Hoosier in program history to run under 21 seconds indoors.
Jake Gebhardt picked up his second silver medal of the weekend, doubling back in the 3000 meters in a personal best of 7:51.77. He broke open a lead with two laps to go but relinquished it back to Wisconsin's Bob Liking and Jackson Sharp on the bell lap.
With 100 meters to go, Gebhardt charged down Liking and nearly caught Sharp, finishing second by just .24 seconds in his second event of the weekend.
The duo of Laidler and Gebhardt combined to score 29 points and rack up three silver medals across four events this weekend.
Camden Marshall and Keefer Soehngen scored points in the 800 meters, finishing sixth and eighth respectively. Christopher Grant (60 meters), Parker Raymond (600 meters) and the Men's 4x400 Relay team provided scoring as well.
Jayden Ulrich produced a lifetime best in the Shot Put of 17.56m/57-7.5 to finish third in a loaded field. Her series included additional marks of 17.47m/57-3.75 and 17.35m/56-11.25 as she medaled in the Shot Put at the conference meet for the first time in her career.
Mahogany Jenkins provided 5.5 points between the High Jump (t-fifth) and Triple Jump (seventh) with marks of 1.77m/5-9.75 and 12.59m/41-3.75 respectively.
Alyssa Robinson lowered her personal best across 200 meters, running 23.76 to take seventh place on Saturday evening.

The NCAA Indoor Championships await a select group of Hoosiers in two weeks in Albuquerque, N.M. Following championship weekend, the NCAA will announce bids to the national meet.
