Indiana Softball Set to Play Midweek Games at WKU, Belmont

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball (14-9) is set for two midweek games against Western Kentucky and Belmont on Monday and Tuesday after going 5-0 at the Lady Bison Classic at Draper Diamond over the weekend.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Hoosiers went 5-0 on the weekend at the Lady Bison Classic, winning the series against Evansville and Lipscomb. IU finished the weekend with a shut-out win against Akron, 5-0.
- Freshman Taryn Kern had eight hits with a .571 batting avg., eight runs, two doubles, three walks, three home runs and 12 RBI with a 1.357 slugging percentage on the weekend
- Sophomore pitcher Brianna Copeland went 3-0 on the weekend in the circle totaling 19 innings pitched and 24 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
- Western Kentucky (15-8) is coming off a 2-1 series loss against Miami (OH). The Hilltoppers won the first game in the double header on Saturday, 15-7, before falling 8-5 in the second game. On Sunday, WKU dropped the last game in the series, 8-4.
- On the season, the Hilltoppers hold a .317 batting average with 192 hits and 120 runs.
- Taylor Sanders is leading the tops with a .406 batting average on 28 hits, scoring 19 runs this season. She also leads the team with five home runs and 25 RBI.
- Redshirt-sophomore Kelsie Houchens holds a 3.29 ERA and has made 12 appearances. Freshman Maddy Wood holds a 4.01 ERA on 13 appearances.
- Belmont (13-6) is 2-0 on the weekend at the Governor's Classic picking up wins against Austin Peay and Dayton. The Bruins will close out the series with a double header in Clarksville this afternoon.
- BU holds a .257 batting average with 138 hits and 19 doubles on the season along with 70 RBI.
- Redshirt-freshman Kristen Green leads the Bruins' offense with a .354 batting average on 17 hits. She has hit four doubles, one home run, with nine RBI and scored seven runs this season.
SERIES NOTES
- The Hilltoppers lead the series 3-1 against the Hoosiers. The two teams haven't met in over 15 years with WKU winning the last match up on March 25, 2006, 4-3.
- Indiana holds a 2-1 advantage over Belmont. The two teams last met in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Feb. 10, 2010, when the Hoosiers defeated the Bruins 9-0 in five innings.
TARYN IT UP
- Freshman Taryn Kern had nine hits with a .643 batting avg., eight runs, two doubles, three walks, three home runs and 12 RBI with a 1.429 slugging percentage at the Lady Bison Classic.
- She leads the team with 21 RBI and five home runs on the season.
- In her rookie debut, she tallied two hits, one RBI and seven assists in her rookie debut.
- The San Jose, Calif., native, started in all five games for the Hoosiers at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational facing four top-25 teams.
COPELAND IN THE CIRCLE
- Sophomore Brianna Copeland boasts a 1.87 ERA with 53 strikeouts on the season.
- She improved to 6-0 on the mound, going 3-0 on the weekend at the Lady Bison Classic.
- She threw her first career no-hitter against Prairie View A&M tallying a career-high ten strikeouts, along with no hits, one run and zero walks. After opening weekend, she has an era of .60 after pitching 11.2 innings and totaling 14 strikeouts.
THE NEXT 60 FEET
- The Hoosiers tallied 16 stolen bases at the Lady Bison Classic.
- Indiana leads the conference with 54 stolen bases this season.
- IU's eight stolen bases against IUPUI is the most in a game from a Big Ten school this season.
