KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Only one Indiana women's swimmer was projected to qualify for finals individually Thursday (March 16) night based on seeding. However, four will return for the evening session on day two of the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
All six Hoosier swimmers improved their seeding with three of those posting season-best times during the preliminary session. Three athletes qualified for B finals, while sophomore Ching Hwee Gan earned a spot in the 500-yard freestyle championship final.
Gan improved her seeding by five spots from No. 12 to seventh after winning heat seven in the morning. Her 4:39.21 was just .25 seconds off her best time set at the 2023 Big Ten Championships.
Senior Ashley Turak tied the 50-yard freestyle program record, matching Cora Dupre's 21.90 set at Big Tens in 2020. Turak chopped a tenth off her seed time to move up 13 spots into the No. 14 seed. Freshman Kristina Paegle, whose seed time was a hundredth off the program record coming into the morning, went 21.98 to capture the last consolation final spot.
Seniors Noelle Peplowski and Mackenzie Looze each saw big leaps in the 200 IM. No. 24-seeded Peplowski improved her personal best time from 1:55.89 to 1:55.37 to earn the No. 14 seed. Looze missed final qualification but swam a season-best 1:56.32, the 21st fastest time in the field.
