Hoosiers Wrestle Through Session I of NCAA Championships

TULSA, Okla. –––– Four Hoosier wrestlers began competition in the 2023 NCAA Championships on Thursday afternoon at the BOK Center.
Indiana's Graham Rooks (149), Derek Gilcher (157), DJ Washington (174) and Jacob Bullock (285) are all representing the Hoosiers in Tulsa this weekend.
Rooks and Washington both advanced to the second round of the championship bracket by winning their opening round bout. Gilcher and Bullock each lost their match and will move to the consolation bracket.
No. 20-seeded Rooks had to come back on No. 13 Kellyn March (North Dakota State) to win a close 4-3 decision. March opened the match with a takedown which was followed by a Rooks escape.
Rooks started down in the second and escaped to make it a 2-2 match. Then, Rooks got to his offense with a takedown to take control of the match. March would escape in the third after starting in bottom to make it 4-3, but never scored again, securing a win for Rooks.
In No. 17 Washington's win, his offense powered his way through to a 17-2 technical fall victory over No. 16 Sam Wolf (Air Force).
Washington earned a pair of first period takedowns and four-point near falls to build a dominant 12-1 lead. A little over halfway through the second period, Washington amassed a 15-point lead to win by tech fall.
No. 18 Gilcher dropped a close match to No. 15 Jacob Wright by decision, 3-2. Gilcher earned a pair of escapes but Wright's takedown, in addition, to a third period escape were enough to get by.
10 Zach Elam (Mizzou) defeated No. 23 Bullock in a 4-1 decision. It was 0-0 through the first period before Bullock's escape put him up 1-0. Elam accumulated four points by way of a takedown, a stalling point and riding time advantage.
