Indiana Wrestling Completes Matches Through Session III of NCAA Championships

TULSA, Okla. ––––– Indiana Wrestling wrapped up competition from Session III of the NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at the BOK Center.
The Hoosiers dropped a handful of close matches and lost three grapplers for the tournament. Redshirt senior Graham Rooks remains alive in the tournament, moving to the consolation bracket after losing his quarterfinal match.
The No. 20-seeded Rooks will wrestle against No. 10 Michael Blockhus of Minnesota for a guaranteed top-eight finish in the bracket and a spot on the podium to claim All-American status.
Rooks and the rest of the championships will resume tonight during Session IV of the tournament at 8 PM (ET) at the BOK Center.
MATCH RECAPS
In Indiana's first match of the day, No. 20 Rooks lost a heartbreaker to No. 12 Shayne Van Ness (Penn State) in a 10-7 decision. Rooks led most of the way, earning a 7-3 lead through two periods and without giving up a takedown.
Van Ness got to his offense and won the bout down the stretch for the Nittany Lions.
In the second round of the wrestlebacks, Indiana redshirt junior Donnell Washington won his first bout over No. 18 Tate Picklo (Oklahoma) in an 11-3 major decision where Washington dictated the pace from start to finish.
Washington would fall in his next bout of the consolation bracket to No. 9 Edmond Ruth in a close 6-5 decision.
Indiana's No. 18 Derek Gilcher and No. 23 Jacob Bullock both lost in close matches in the second round of consolation matches.
Gilcher dropped one to No. 17 Jarrett Jacques (Missouri) in a 3-1 decision. Bullock lost to No. 8 Sam Schuyler (Iowa State) in a 3-2 bout.
