RALEIGH, N.C. - Jake Gebhardt provided a brilliant performance across 5000 meters on Thursday night at NC State to open the outdoor campaign for the distance crew.
A strong close down the final straightway and a final 400 meters run in 58.9 seconds saw Gebhardt climb to No. 4 on the program's all-time list in the 5000 meters with a mark of 13:37.70. He trails just Bob Kennedy, Andy Bayer and Jim Spivey in the event, three runners who all won NCAA titles for the Hoosiers in either Cross Country or Track.
Primarily a participant in the 3000-meter steeplechase during the outdoor campaign, the Sterling, Ill. native stretched to 5000 meters with a 25-second personal best as he continues his final season for the Hoosiers.
Gabriel Sanchez ran his first race since December, throwing down a 14:03.98 season-opening mark in the 5000 meters. His split 59.2 across his final lap taking him all the way up to second in his section. He shaved 21 seconds off his personal best after returning from an injury that sidelined him nearly the entire indoor season.
Austin Haskett and Abe Eckman opened up their outdoor campaigns in the 5K in 14:16.00 and 14:45.67 respectively.
Dustin Horter ran 3:44.19 in the 1500 meters, just one second off his personal best. He got caught on the rail before making his move to the outside on the final lap, taking seventh in his section.
Claire Overfelt closed out the night with a career debut in the 10,000 meters. She set her lifetime best at 35.32.98, saving her best lap for last with a 1:22.06 split across the final 400 meters.
