THE HOOSIER LINEUP
The Hoosiers open the outdoor campaign in North Carolina for the Raleigh Relays on the campus of NC State.
This weekend will be contested by the Sprints, Hurdles, Distance and Mid-Distance runners. The Jumps, Pole Vault and Throws will all open their campaigns at the Pepsi Florida Relays in two weeks.
A majority of distance runners will open up in the 5000 meters including the likes of Jenna Barker, Sarah Schmitt, Maddie Dalton, Jake Gebhardt and Gabriel Sanchez.
The Hoosiers will double enter a handful of runners including Antonio Laidler in the 200m/400m, Dustin Horter in the 800m/1500m and Alyssa Robinson in the 200m/400m.
IU will introduce the 4x100 relay into its lineup for the first time this season. Nile Brown, Robinson, Kylee Poulton and Olivia Gee are set to run for the women while Laidler, Christopher Grant, Ray Brodie and Trelee Banks are entered for the men.
Shaton Vaughn and John Colquitt will race in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time this year, an outdoor specific event.
Claire Overfelt is scheduled to open her outdoor season in the late night 10,000 meters.
In total, 31 athletes will compete for IU across 21 events on both the men's and women's sides.
INDOOR RECAP
The Hoosiers wrapped up the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. to finish out the indoor season.
Three entries for IU all earned All-American honors led by its Men's Distance Medley Relay team which finished 5th.
The quartet of Camden Marshall, Shaton Vaughn, Parker Raymond and Jake Gebhardt ran a fantastic race, outkicking North Carolina down the stretch.
The fifth-place finish marked the 11th time that a Ron Helmer-coached Men's DMR team at IU scored at the national meet.
Paola Fernandez-Sola was ninth in the Women's Long Jump, making the final but finishing one spot off the podium. She matched her personal best of 6.39m/20-11.75 on her opening jump but was beaten out for eighth on a tie-breaker with Pitt's Ilse Steigenga.
Jayden Ulrich was 14th in the Shot Put, earning her first Second Team All-American distinction in the event.
2023 OUTDOOR PRIMER
There are 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA levels during the outdoor campaign. Outdoor-specific events include the 4x100 relay, the 1500 meters, the Steeplechase, the 10,000 meters, the 400-meter hurdles, the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. The Heptathlon (W)/Decathlon (M) also introduce new events to increase the workload.
A number of events transition from indoor-specific distances to the standard outdoor distance. For example, the 60 meters indoors becomes 100 meters outdoors.
Despite losing the DMR in the transition to outdoors, the Hoosiers add a number of key pieces to its lineup this time of year.
Jayden Ulrich (Discus), Sean Mockler (Hammer) and Noah Koch (Discus) all add their strongest event. Ulrich was the 2022 Big Ten Champion as a freshman and she and Mockler both hold school records in their respective events.
The 1500 meters and Steeplechase have both been kind to the Hoosiers over the years. After a strong indoor season, Jake Gebhardt will steeple outdoors where he looks to score big points for the team.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere have both been strong 400-meter hurdlers during their career and have the chance to run their primary event outdoors.
