Indiana Softball Hosts Butler, Travels to Purdue for Doubleheader

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball (22-9, 3-0 B1G) hosts the Butler Bulldogs (12-18) tomorrow at Andy Mohr Field before heading north before a doubleheader against archrival Purdue (15-16, 0-3 B1G) at Bittinger Stadium on Wednesday.

- Indiana extended their winning streak to 15 games with a sweep against the No. 22 Maryland Terrapins.
- Sophomore Sarah Stone had the walk-off hit in game one as the Hoosiers went up 1-0 in the series on Saturday afternoon.
- On Sunday, the teams faced off in a doubleheader where IU run-ruled the Terps, 15-7, for the series win before defeating them 11-4 for the sweep.
- Freshman duo Avery Parker and Taryn Kern and Stone combined for 15 hits, four doubles, seven home runs and 18 RBI against the ranked conference foe. Parker and Kern also hit a team high batting average of .556.
- Trio of IU pitchers Brianna Copeland, Heather Johnson and Macy Montgomery earned wins inside the circle against the Terps.
- Butler (12-18, 6-0) is on an eight-game win streak as they come out of a series sweep against Providence.
- They are at the top of the leaderboard in the Big East with six wins in conference play and two series sweeps.
- Redshirt-sophomore duo Kaylee Gross and Paige Dorsett lead the Bulldogs offense with a .345 batting average. Gross has totaled 30 hits, five doubles, 20 runs and eight RBI along with 11 walks.
- Dorsett has an OPS of 1.035 totaling 10 runs, 20 hits, five doubles and three home runs with 19 RBI. She has 11 free passes on the season with nine walks and two hit by pitch.
- Senior pitcher Mackenzie Griman holds it down in the circle with an ERA of 3.36. She has collected six wins on 15 appearances in 83.1 innings pitched this season.
- Purdue (15-16, 0-3 B1G) dropped their conference opener at Nebraska falling 7-9, 1-4, and 2-4 in the three-game series.
- Sophomore Tyrina Jones leads the Boilermakers with a .368 batting average, totaling 39 hits, five doubles and six home runs on the season. She has also batted in 24 runners and is 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts.
- Mo Wimpee leads the team in the circle with a 2.92 ERA and a 4-4 record on the season in 18 appearances.
- Indiana leads the series against Butler 11-3. The last match up in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19. In 2018, the two Indiana teams faced off in Bloomington with the Hoosiers coming out on top, 7-2.
- Against archrival Purdue, IU trails, 40-41, in all-time wins. The two teams last on April 26, 2022, where IU swept the Boilermakers, winning both games in the doubleheader.
- Indiana sophomore first basemen Sarah Stone carried the Hoosier's offense as they swept No. 22 ranked Maryland Terrapins and extended their win streak to 15.
- On the weekend, she batted 10 runners in, with five hits, one double and three home runs.
- She had a team high 1.364 slugging percentage with a 1.781 OPS on the weekend.
- The Bedford, Ind., native had the walk-off hit in game one of the series against the Terps.
- In game two, she hit a three RBI bomb in the first inning providing momentum for the squad.
- She carried that over into the final game of the series, going yard two times, adding four more RBI.
- Kern is on a roll for the Hoosiers as she continued to be the start of the Hoosiers offense with a team high batting average of .556 as they extended their win streak to 15 and swept the No. 22 ranked Maryland Terrapins.
- She totaled five hits with two doubles, two home runs with three RBI with an outstanding 2.111 OPS.
- The San Jose, Calif., native leads the Big Ten in slugging percentage (1.025), OBS (.591), OPS (1.616), RBI (37) and home runs (12).
- The IU freshman is second in conference in batting average (.450) and runs scored (35).
- Freshman Taryn Kern earns Big Ten Co-Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for the second straight week.
- She batted .667 on the week with an OPS of 2.735. She held an eye-popping slugging percentage of 1.917 and an on base percentage of .818 including four home runs, one double, one triple and 11 RBI.
- Freshman Avery Parker boasted a batting average of .556 in the Hoosiers sweep against No. 22 Maryland totaling five hits, a double and two home runs.
- She has a career total of six home runs in her rookie year.
- On the season, she holds a batting average of .351 with 26 hits. She has scored 21 runs, seven doubles, one triple totaling 13 RBI.
- Parker hit her first career home run against Lipscomb. She added three more on the weekend, totaling eight RBI in Nashville, Tenn.
- Sophomore pitcher Brianna Copeland picked up her 10th win inside the circle after earning the win in game one against No. 22 Maryland.
- The Pelham, Ala., native holds a 2.08 ERA with 70.2 innings pitched and 70 strikeouts.
- Indiana leads the Big Ten in batting with a .335 average on the season. The cream and crimson have totaled 256 hits, 55 doubles, five triples, and 38 home runs.
- They have tallied 201 RBI along with 99 free passes and 48 hit by the pitch.
