4/13/2023 9:00:00 AM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Another big weekend awaits the Indiana Track and Field teams with competitive fields and better weather setting up the potential for fast times and big marks across the board.
IU will test their distance crew against some of the best in the nation this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational while Hope Purcell goes for a big mark in the Heptathlon at the same meet.
The rest of IU's roster will compete in Louisville. After a tough weekend of weather in Knoxville, IU's sprints, jumps, throws and pole vault will hope its trip to Louisville brings fast conditions to improve on times already run this season.
This is the final split weekend for IU this season with the Indiana Invitational, Penn Relays and Billy Hayes Invitational left on the docket before the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Purcell begins the weekend over two days on Thursday (April 13) and Friday (April 14). The Bryan Clay Invitational and Louisville Invitational meets will be contested on Friday (April 14) and Saturday (April 15).

Jayden Ulrich was named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week on April 12th after throwing a Big Ten lead in the discus and the No. 2 mark in the Big Ten in the shot put at the Triton Invitational.
THE HOOSIER LINEUP
The Hoosiers will have athletes compete at three different meets this weekend with the bulk of the team headed to Louisville.
Hope Purcell will contest her first Heptathlon since 2021 this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational. She was the Big Ten Champion in the Pentathlon but hasn't competed in the seven-eventer in two years.
The distance crew will also head west to the Bryan Clay Invitational in California to race some of the nation's best athletes. NCAA leader Camden Marshall will contest the 1500 meters alongside the likes of Jake Gebhardt and Dustin Horter.
Sarah Schmitt and Gabriel Sanchez will run the 5000 meters while Maddie Dalton and Jenna Barker will look to improve on their season-best times in the 1500 meters. In total, 14 athletes will run out in Azusa, Calif. this weekend.
48 athletes will compete at the Louisville Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Kentucky.
Antonio Laidler, Christopher Grant, Alyssa Robinson and Trelee Banks are scheduled to run the 100 meters. Kaylee Lane and Lauren Thomas will double in the 200 meters and 400 meters.
John Colquitt will be busy in the 110-meter hurdles, 200 meters and both relay teams. Micah Camble and Shaton Vaughn are scheduled to compete in the 400-meter hurdles.
Alyssa Skorge and Audrey Mendrys will contest the 800 meters and 1500 meters with Maria Anderson making her outdoor season debut in the 800 meters.
Mahogany Jenkins, Serena Bolden and Grayson Rolen headline the contingent in the field events. Bolden will compete in the long jump and triple jump and will also run the 100 meters.
The Hoosiers will have all six pole vaulters back in the rotation this weekend. After a rainy and windy weekend in Knoxville, they will line back up with the hopes of better vaulting conditions.
Kelly Moran, Taylor Schoonveld and Crase Bergman enjoyed successful weekends at the Tennessee Invite and will all be back in the same events in Louisville.
IU will line up four relays this weekend including its primary men's 4x100 relay team of Colquitt, Laidler, Banks and Grant. The quartet ran a season's best of 40.74 two weeks ago at the Pepsi Florida Relays.
Both the men and will run 4x400 relay teams to close out the weekend's action on Saturday.
TENNESSEE INVITE AND TRITON INVITATIONAL RECAP
IU had its first split weekend of the outdoor season, sending athletes to the Tennessee Invite in Knoxville and the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
Jayden Ulrich bettered her school record in the discus with a massive, Big Ten-leading throw of 59.29m/194-6. She also threw a season's best in the shot put with a mark of 17.06m/55-11.75.
Makayla Hunter had a pair of personal bests in the javelin (48.36m/158-8) and the shot put (15.07m/49-5.5).
Paola Fernandez-Sola jumped a massive season's best in the long jump with a mark of 6.49m/21-3.5 in rainy conditions. She helped spearhead a strong effort from the women's jumps group with event titles in the long jump, triple jump (Mahogany Jenkins) and high jump (Taylor Schoonveld).
Claire Overfelt dominated over 5000 meters, winning her race by over 10 seconds in a personal best time of 16:45.91.
Camden Marshall ran a season's best 1:50.98 across 800 meters, leading a contingent of seven Hoosiers in the event.
Jake Gebhardt and Alyssa Skorge opened their seasons in the 3000-meter steeplechase with big marks of 8:59.77 and 10:39.55 respectively.
2023 OUTDOOR PRIMER
There are 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA levels during the outdoor campaign. Outdoor-specific events include the 4x100 relay, the 1500 meters, the Steeplechase, the 10,000 meters, the 400-meter hurdles, the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. The Heptathlon (W)/Decathlon (M) also introduce new events to increase the workload.
A number of events will transition from indoor-specific distances to the standard outdoor distance. For example, the 60 meters indoors becomes 100 meters outdoors.
Despite losing the DMR in the transition to outdoors, the Hoosiers add a number of key pieces to its lineup this time of year.
Jayden Ulrich (Discus), Sean Mockler (Hammer) and Noah Koch (Discus) all add their strongest event. Ulrich was the 2022 Big Ten Champion as a freshman and she and Mockler both hold school records in their respective events.
The 1500 meters and Steeplechase have both been kind to the Hoosiers over the years. After a strong indoor season, Jake Gebhardt will steeple outdoors where he looks to score big points for the team.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere have both been strong 400-meter hurdlers during their career and have the chance to run their primary event outdoors.
