PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Alyssa Skorge ran a big lifetime best in the 3000-meter steeplechase to highlight the opening night of the 127th Penn Relays.
The Jasper, Ind. stopped the clock in 10:24.04, improving on her personal best from 2021 by over four seconds. She moved into eighth on the program's all-time performance list, passing Haley Harris (2018) and Erica Ridderman (2012) in IU history.
Another star of the evening, Claire Overfelt used a strong negative split over the back half of her 10,000-meter race to chase down the lead pack and finish second in her Penn Relays debut.
After running 35:32.98 in her career debut in the 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays in late March, Overfelt shaved over a minute-and-a-half off that time, stopping the clock in 34:00.24.
Her time now sits No. 9 in program history and No. 7 in the Big Ten this season. The Whiteland, Ind. native closed her final 400 meters in 1:16.98, five seconds better than the next runner on the track.
Austin Haskett ran a 14-second season's best in the steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:06.45. After falling behind the pack, he ran the final 400 meters in 1:11.51.
His mark sits top-10 in the Big Ten this season, joining teammate Jake Gebhardt (8:59.77) among the conference's best in the event.
Skylar Stidam (14:14.55) and Tristan Forsythe (14:17.55) both ran personal bests across 5000 meters on Thursday.
The pair each dropped 13 or more seconds off their season's bests run at Tennessee three weeks ago as well.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere competed in the 400-meter hurdles, running 52.82 and 55.10 respectively in the opening event of the night for IU.
IU will begin its journey in the illustrious lineup of relays tomorrow afternoon. The Distance Medley Relay (men and women), Sprint Medley Relay (men), 4x100 relay (men) and 4x400 relay (men) headline an exciting day of action on Friday in Philadelphia.
