PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite facing the worst weather of the entire season, Hope Purcell recorded an outdoor personal best of 5.94m/19-6 in her first long jump competition since the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
She finished second in the college section of the women's long jump and continues to put together the pieces in preparation for a heptathlon at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington.
After running a top-10 mark indoors in the Distance Medley Relay, IU's quartet of Maddie Dalton (3:24.60), Alyssa Robinson (53.95), Maddie Russin (2:10.68) and Sarah Schmitt (4:44.86) added their names to the outdoor top-10 list with a time of 11:14.08.
IU finished 10th in the race but were the top-finishing Big Ten team ahead of conference foes Penn State (11th) and Ohio State (13th). Stanford, the NCAA Indoor Champions, won in 10:50.56.
Their time sits No. 6 in program history outdoors. The school record was set last year at the Penn Relays when Hannah Stoffel, Morgan Snow, Kelly Mindak and Bailey Hertenstein carried the baton in 10:59.54.
Antonio Laidler was the lone runner to compete in an individual event on Friday afternoon, qualifying through to the finals of 100 meters.
He produced a 10.74 while going into the pouring rain and a strong headwind. He will run again tomorrow afternoon in the finals of the event.
The Hoosiers will go for their second-consecutive win in the men's 100 meters at the Penn Relays after Rikkoi Brathwaite captured the crown in 2022.
Noah Koch finished second in the college shot put with a mark of 17.27m/56-8. He is slated to throw the discus in the championship section tomorrow morning.
Down in Texas, Paola Fernandez-Sola produced an outstanding long jump series to finish second at the Texas Invitational.
Four of five jumps were wind-aided including a gusty, 6.42m/21-0.75 (+4.2) mark. She landed a wind-legal 6.32m/20-9 on her fifth of the attempt of the afternoon.
IU's stay at the Penn Relays finishes tomorrow with a pair of highlighted events in the men's 4xMile relay and the women's 4x1500 relay.
Individual athletes scheduled to compete include Grayson Rolen (high jump), Mahogany Jenkins (triple jump) and Jayden Ulrich (shot put).
