KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Despite rainy and windy conditions, All-American jumper Paola Fernandez-Sola enjoyed a successful day on the runway, setting a Big Ten lead with a mark of 6.49m/21-3.5 to win the long jump at the Tennessee Invite.
She was clean on all six attempts, leaping out to 6.41m/21-0.5 or better on two occasions. Her mark sits No. 5 in the NCAA this season and is the third-best wind legal jump in the country.
Kelly Moran had a successful day for the Hoosiers as well, recording a wind-aided personal best of 5.58m/18-3.75. Her jump of 5.46m/17-11 on the second attempt of the series was the only one below the 2.0m/s threshold of allowable wind.
Tyler Carrel led the IU efforts in the pole vault with a season's best of 5.25m/17-2.75. He cleared four-straight bars on the first attempt before missing on three tries at 5.35m/17-6.5.
In his first outdoor competition of the year, Crase Bergman scored a lifetime best of 6.82m/22-4.5 in the long jump. Kynton Grays finished just behind him in 6.77m/22-2.5.
Shanna Esters was another in a small group of Hoosiers to make their outdoor debuts in Knoxville. She launched the javelin out to 35.80m/117-5, setting a personal best of nearly four meters in the process.
Kylee Poulton won her heat of the 200 meters in 26.49 with Olivia Gee running a season's best of 25.71 out of the fifth heat. Alex Smith debuted in the men's 200 meters in 22.48.
Claire Overfelt dominated the competition in the 5000 meters, winning the event by 10 seconds. In her first 5000-meter race of her career on the track, Overfelt dropped a 16:45.91. She was one of just two athletes in the race to break 17 minutes.
Tori Schmidt ran a personal best in the same race, finishing 10th in 17:29.68.
