Antonio Laidler and Christopher Grant will be back in action in the 100 meters after a strong weekend at Florida. The duo ran 10.41 or better in their season opener. They will also make up half the quartet to run the 4x100 relay.
Camden Marshall, Parker Raymond, Keefer Soehngen and Maddie Russin will feature in the 800 meters with Gabriel Sanchez dropping down to 1500 meters for the first time this year.
Phoebe Bates and Claire Overfelt return to action in the 1500 meters and 5000 meters respectively after strong opening weekends in Raleigh two weeks ago.
Jake Gebhardt, Austin Haskett, Alyssa Skorge and Katelyn Winton will hit the water in the steeplechase for the first time this season.
Keelan Grant, Tristan Forsythe, Skylar Stidam and Shynae Deas are also expected to make their outdoor season debuts this weekend for the Hoosiers.
58 athletes in total are entered across the pair of meets this weekend. Eight athletes are expected to contest two or more individual events including Hope Purcell and Alex Smith.
PEPSI FLORIDA RELAYS RECAP
IU sent a full contingent of athletes to the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville including a representative from each event area.
Camden Marshall had a big weekend, running a NCAA and Big Ten lead in the 1500 meters of 3:39.51. His mark is now seventh in program history.
Maddie Dalton (4:18.26) and Jenna Barker (4:20.66) both had outstanding runs in the 1500 meters with personal bests. Dalton also moved into the program's top-10 list.
In his first outdoor meet for the Hoosiers, Noah Koch scored big performances in the Discus and Shot with throws of 55.70m/182-9 and 18.04m/59-2.25 respectively. Both of his marks entered him into the top-10 in school history.
Mahogany Jenkins recorded a lifetime best in the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.86m/42-2.25 to move into third in program history in the event.
Makayla Hunter moved up the charts in the javelin, throwing 47.59m/156-1 in her season opener.
Christopher Grant had a productive all-around weekend, running times of 10.38 (100m), 21.33 (200m) and 40.74 (4x100 relay).
2023 OUTDOOR PRIMER
There are 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA levels during the outdoor campaign. Outdoor-specific events include the 4x100 relay, the 1500 meters, the Steeplechase, the 10,000 meters, the 400-meter hurdles, the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. The Heptathlon (W)/Decathlon (M) also introduce new events to increase the workload.
A number of events will transition from indoor-specific distances to the standard outdoor distance. For example, the 60 meters indoors becomes 100 meters outdoors.
Despite losing the DMR in the transition to outdoors, the Hoosiers add a number of key pieces to its lineup this time of year.
Jayden Ulrich (Discus), Sean Mockler (Hammer) and Noah Koch (Discus) all add their strongest event. Ulrich was the 2022 Big Ten Champion as a freshman and she and Mockler both hold school records in their respective events.
The 1500 meters and Steeplechase have both been kind to the Hoosiers over the years. After a strong indoor season, Jake Gebhardt will steeple outdoors where he looks to score big points for the team.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere have both been strong 400-meter hurdlers during their career and have the chance to run their primary event outdoors.
