BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It was a 1-0 deficit through seven innings for the Indiana baseball program on Sunday (April 9) against Iowa. And, after it tied the game in the seventh, a wild eighth inning ensued that saw the Hoosiers lose and then retake the lead on the way to a 4-2 victory.
The scoring started with one Iowa (22-8, 2-4 B1G) run in the top of the first inning and the halted until the seventh when Indiana (22-10, 7-2 B1G) scored a single run to tie the game. After the Hawkeyes jumped in front with one unearned run in the eighth, the Hoosiers put up three runs in the eighth to grab the lead for good.
A career-high four hits from senior Peter Serruto included a one-out single and hustle to second base in front of an Iowa error in the seventh inning – eventually scoring the first run of the contest. His eighth-inning base hit drove in the game-tying run with two outs, and he eventually came around to score on redshirt junior Bobby Whalen's two-RBI base hit to give IU the lead.
Whalen added three RBIs to a three-hit afternoon at the plate. Sophomore Carter Mathison had three hits and started the eighth inning with a base hit and came around to score the game-tying run. Freshman Tyler Cerny beat out a would-be double play ball in the eighth inning and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run.
Senior Phillip Glasser moved his reached base streak to 32 games and was on base twice with a walk and hit-by-pitch in the game. Freshman Devin Taylor was on base twice in the contest with a single and a walk to move his reached base streak to 21 games.
Four pitchers combined to hold Iowa to just five hits and one earned runs – two total runs – over nine innings. Redshirt senior Craig Yoho came on in relief and fired 3 1/3 innings scoreless with one hit allowed, two walks and three strikeouts. Graduate student Wes Burton fired two scoreless frames.
Freshman Brayden Risedorph (1-0) allowed one unearned run over two innings of relief work to earn the win. He allowed two hits and struck out the final batter of the contest to earn his first collegiate win.
Keaton Anthony led the Iowa offense with three hits and Michael Seegers had two hits and scored one run. Sam Hojnar had the lone RBI for the Hawkeyes. Ty Langenberg threw 6 1/3 innings scoreless in the start and allowed six hits. He walked three and struck out two in the no decision.
