PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – No. 16-ranked Indiana rowing executed on Saturday (May 27), advancing all three crews to Sunday's C finals at the 2023 NCAA Rowing Championships at Camden County Boathouse in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
After qualifying for the C/D semifinals on Friday, IU placed top three in each race Saturday to earn a spot in the upper finals. As a result, all three boats will finish between No. 13 and No. 18 nationally on Sunday.
IU's Varsity Eight was part of the first race of the day Saturday, finishing second by 2.8 seconds. The top three boats – Duke, IU and USC – were all within a half of a second after the 500-meter mark. IU stayed close to the Blue Devil boat throughout the race and had open water over the Trojans by the 1500-meter mark before taking the runner-up spot over USC by 4.7 seconds.
The Indiana Second Varsity Eight also took a second-place performance, with a three-second split from leader Duke. The Hoosiers finished almost 10 seconds in front of the rest of the five-team heat.
IU came in third in its Varsity Four semifinal heat, still enough to qualify for the C final. IU battled with second-place Penn for the entirety of the race. Down by 1.8 seconds after 500 meters, the Hoosiers stormed back to lead of four tenths with 500 to go. It was Penn who got out it front in the end with a seven tenths advantage. IU out-paced fourth-place Jacksonville by 26 seconds.
Indiana will determine its national finish as a team and for each of its three boats on Sunday. Finals begin at 8:12 a.m. ET, with IU racing at 8:24 (V4), 8:48 (2V8) and 9:12 (V8). Fans can watch the action on NCAA.com.
