Track and Field Primer | Billy Hayes Invitational
5/4/2023 11:00:00 AM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana track and field teams will wrap up the outdoor regular season on Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational. The final installment of a seven-week regular season will give IU's athletes one final tune-up before the postseason begins.
The Hoosiers will host this year's Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington from May 12-14, the first time the meet has been at IU since 2018.
The NCAA East Preliminary round will be held in Jacksonville on the campus of North Florida while the NCAA Outdoor Championships takes place in Austin at the University of Texas.
59 athletes are scheduled to compete for IU this weekend including a heavy contingent in the 800 meters, pole vault and long jump.
The next two weeks will decide the postseason fate of a number of athletes. Each Hoosier will need a top-48 mark in their respective event to qualify for the NCAA East Prelims.
Before this weekend's action, the Hoosiers would have 27 entries to the NCAA East Prelims with a number of athletes firmly in contention to qualify.
Friday's action begins at 1:00 PM and lasts throughout the day, ending with the men's and women's 4x400 relays.
THE MEET
Location: Bloomington, Ind.
Dates: May 5th

NEWS AND NOTES
The Hoosiers have eight top-five marks among the women's field events including Ulrich (shot put and discus), Serena Bolden (long jump), Paola Fernandez-Sola (long jump), Mahogany Jenkins (triple jump and high jump), Makayla Hunter (javelin) and Jessica Mercier (pole vault)
Camden Marshall was named the Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Week on April 5th for his then NCAA-leading 3:39.51 in the 1500 meters at the Pepsi Florida Relays.
At the Penn Relays, Marshall ran the fastest carry in the men's 4x800 relay, splitting 1:46.68 to help the Hoosiers to a sixth-place finish and the No. 6 mark in program history (7:20.96).
Ulrich was named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week on April 12th after throwing a then-Big Ten lead in the discus and then-No. 2 mark in the Big Ten in the shot put at the Triton Invitational.
Antonio Laidler became the second athlete to match or improve upon a school record during the outdoor season. He clocked a 10.20 to match Rikkoi Brathwaite's school record in the 100 meters. However, Laidler's time is the fastest by a Hoosier run within the collegiate season.
Alyssa Robinson has become one of the most versatile sprinters in program history. She is the only woman to record top-8 program marks outdoors in all three sprint events (100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters).
Jake Gebhardt is the only IU runner with two top-five Big Ten marks this year, having run 8:59.77 (3000-meter steeplechase) and 13:37.70 (5000 meters) in the opening stages of the outdoor season.
The next program record to fall might come from Jenkins who keeps inching closer to becoming IU's second-ever six-foot high jumper. She attempted three tries at 1.83m/6-0.5 at the Indiana Invitational which would've broken the school record set by Emma Kimoto in 2013.
Noah Koch now owns four top-six marks in program history in just four months of competition for the Hoosiers. He threw 18.36m/60-3 (shot put) and 56.10m/184-1 (discus) at the Indiana Invitational to highlight a strong weekend.
While also studying for law schools, Serena Bolden has come to life for the Hoosiers over the last two weeks. She ran 11.72 across 100 meters to move into a tie for tenth in program history. She also has top-10 all-conditions marks in the long jump and triple jump.
Paola Fernandez-Sola has enjoyed terrific form this season. She has a season's best of 6.49m/21-3.5 from the Tennessee Invite. Additional wind-legal marks include a 6.42m jump at the Texas Invitational and a 6.41m jump in Knoxville.
THE HOOSIER LINEUP
The final regular season meet of 2023 will be held in Bloomington with the Billy Hayes Invitational.
IU's contingent of five pole vaulters will be back in action with Nathan Stone, Tyler Sierks, Tyler Carrel, Riley Johnston and Jessica Mercier.
The Hoosiers will field its men's 4x100 relay team and a women's 4x100 relay team. The quartet of Serena Bolden, Nile Brown, Alyssa Robinson and Paola Fernandez-Sola will run for the first time this year.
Camden Marshall, Parker Raymond and Keefer Soehngen are among a large group of athletes entered in the 800 meters. Maddie Russin, Jenna Barker and Elizabeth Stanhope are all scheduled to run on the women's side.
Jayden Ulrich, Makayla Hunter and Noah Koch are all entered in the throws while Sean Mockler is set to return in the hammer throw for the first time since the Pepsi Florida Relays.
Fernandez-Sola, Alex Smith and Robert Blue will all long jump while Grayson Rolen and Taylor Schoonveld are set to go in the high jump.
Dustin Horter will run the 1500 meters alongside Gabriel Sanchez as he chases a mark that earns him a big to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds.
Shaton Vaughn leads a quartet of Hoosiers into the 400-meter hurdles ahead of next week's Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington.
PENN RELAYS AND TEXAS INVITATIONAL RECAP
The Hoosiers spent the weekend split between the Penn Relays and the Texas Invitational.
Alyssa Skorge opened the weekend with a lifetime best in the steeplechase of 10:24.04, moving into eighth in program history.
Claire Overfelt shaved a minute-and-a-half off her lifetime best in the 10,000 meters, running 34:00.24 and moving into ninth in program history.
Hope Purcell recorded an outdoor personal best of 5.94m/19-6 in the long jump despite jumping in rainy and cold conditions.
The IU's women's DMR team of Maddie Dalton, Alyssa Robinson, Maddie Russin and Sarah Schmitt ran the No. 6 time in program history outdoors (11:14.08).
Dalton and Schmitt returned, along with Jenna Barker and Phoebe Bates, to run the 4x1500 relay in 17:39.23, a No. 2 mark in school history.
Camden Marshall split 1:46.68 in the 4x800 to help the Hoosiers to a No. 6 time in program history of 7:20.96.
Down in Texas, Tyler Carrel cleared a season's best 5.35m/17-6.5 in the pole vault while Paola Fernandez-Sola long jumped a windy 6.42m/21-0.75 (+4.2).
2023 OUTDOOR PRIMER
There are 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA levels during the outdoor campaign. Outdoor-specific events include the 4x100 relay, the 1500 meters, the Steeplechase, the 10,000 meters, the 400-meter hurdles, the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. The Heptathlon (W)/Decathlon (M) also introduce new events to increase the workload.
A number of events will transition from indoor-specific distances to the standard outdoor distance. For example, the 60 meters indoors becomes 100 meters outdoors.
Despite losing the DMR in the transition to outdoors, the Hoosiers add a number of key pieces to its lineup this time of year.
Jayden Ulrich (Discus), Sean Mockler (Hammer) and Noah Koch (Discus) all add their strongest event. Ulrich was the 2022 Big Ten Champion as a freshman and she and Mockler both hold school records in their respective events.
The 1500 meters and Steeplechase have both been kind to the Hoosiers over the years. After a strong indoor season, Jake Gebhardt will steeple outdoors where he looks to score big points for the team.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere have both been strong 400-meter hurdlers during their career and have the chance to run their primary event outdoors.
