INDIVIDUAL NEWS AND NOTES
Women's Shot Put
Jayden Ulrich was named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week on April 12th after throwing a then-Big Ten lead in the discus and then-No. 2 mark in the Big Ten in the shot put at the Triton Invitational. She was third in the shot put at the Big Ten meet with a personal best mark of 17.87m/58-7.5 (No. 2 School History).
She has now qualified to three-consecutive national meets in the shot put, indoors or outdoors, over the past two seasons. She was 17th in the nation outdoors as a freshman and improved to 14th indoors in Albuquerque this year.
Men's Discus
Noah Koch now owns four top-six marks in program history in just four months of competition for the Hoosiers. He threw 18.36m/60-3 (shot put) at the Indiana Invitational and 58.70m/192-7 (discus) at the NCAA East Prelims to earn his bid. He also finished sixth at the conference meet in the discus.
Koch, while at Ashland University, was a two-time First Team Division Two All-American in the discus, placing seventh and eighth in 2021 and 2022 respectively. He is IU's first NCAA qualifier in the men's discus since 1994 and now owns the No. 3 mark in program history.
Women's Long Jump
Paola Fernandez-Sola has enjoyed terrific form outdoors after an indoor season where she made the national final and finished ninth in the NCAA. She won the Big Ten outdoor title in Bloomington, jumping 6.52m/21-4.75, just three centimeters off matching the meet record.
IU hasn't had a women's long jump First Team All-American outdoors since Regina Frye in 1993. Fernandez-Sola had the ninth-best qualifying mark across both regions but the fourth-best in the east at 6.37m/20-10.75.
She has already spent time on the runway in Austin this year, competing at the Texas Invitational in late April. A series contested in windy conditions produced a mark of 6.42m/21-0.75w (+4.2).
Men's Pole Vault
Tyler Carrel earned his first bid to a national meet after clearing 5.40m/17-8.5 at the NCAA East Prelims. The Big Ten bronze medalist in the pole vault has been amazing outdoors for the Hoosiers.
Carrel cleared a massive personal best of 5.54m/18-2 at the Billy Hayes Invitational which moved him to third in program history behind only Dave Volz and Mark Buse.
Nathan Stone is a veteran of the NCAA meet, reaching the biggest stage for the fourth time in his career. This will be his second time at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, having reached in 2021 both indoors and outdoors and in 2022 indoors.
He was the Big Ten runner-up after clearing 5.44m/17-10.25 and owns a season's best of 5.49m/18-0 which he jumped at the Indiana Invitational in April. In 2021, he was 13th at the outdoor national meet. His personal best of 5.50m/18-0.5 is tied for fifth in school history. For the first time since 2019, IU has two qualifiers to the national meet in the men's pole vault.
