Hafnaoui's Historic Swim, King's Two Medals Highlight Final Day in Fukuoka (July 30)
Ahmed Hafnaoui broke the 1,500-meter freestyle championship record on the way to his second world title of the week, and Lilly King medaled twice on the final day of the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships Sunday (July 30) in Japan.
Hafnaoui held off Team USA's Bobby Finke in the 1,500 free, out-touching the American by five hundredths of a second to finish in a championship record 14:31.54 which is also the second-fastest time ever.
With the victory, Hafnaoui captured his second world title and third medal of the meet. On Wednesday, Hafnaoui posted the third-fastest time ever in the 800-meter freestyle in 7:37.00 for his first-career world championship. The Tunisian also took silver in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing second by just two tenths.
King brought her career World Championship medal total to 13 on Sunday with a victory in the 4x100-meter medley relay and silver in the 50-meter breaststroke. In the relay, King swam a 1:04.93 split in the breaststroke leg to give Team USA a lead of 2.37 seconds going into the final 200 meters before winning in 3:52.08.
King, Matheny Post 200-Meter Breaststroke Finishes (July 28)
Lilly King just missed out on the podium in the 200-meter breaststroke, placing fourth in 2:22.25 despite going faster than her semifinal time. Josh Matheny was eighth in the men's race, going 2:10.41.
Rafael Miroslaw was part of the seventh-placed Germany 4x200-meter relay that went 7:06.14 and was in medal position after his second leg. Tomer Frankel placed 16th in the 100-meter butterfly (52.04) after semifinal swims and helped Israel finish 10th in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay in the morning session.
Breaststrokers Push on to 200-Meter Finals (July 27)
Lilly King and Josh Matheny will swim in the 200-meter breaststroke finals on Friday night after performing in prelim and semifinal heats on Thursday. Thursday morning, King took fourth in the women's semifinal in 2:22.68. Matheny was sixth in the men's semifinal, going 2:09.04.
Anna Peplowski picked up Indiana's fifth medal of the meet after swimming the preliminary of the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay, helping Team USA earn the top qualifying spot. Team USA went on to finish second in the final Thursday night.
Hafnaoui Captures World Title in 800-Meter Freestyle (July 26)
Indiana swimming and diving's Ahmed Hafnaoui won his first world championship gold on Wednesday (July 26), triumphing in the 800-meter freestyle at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships.
Representing Tunisia, Hafnaoui blew away the field in the final 50 meters with a 26.24 final split. His 7:37.00 is the third-fastest swim ever and beat out Sam Short by .76 after the Australian out-touched him by two tenths in the 400-meter race earlier this week. Hafanoui now has a gold and a silver medal in his World Championships debut.
Hafnaoui is Indiana's first male swimmer to win world championships gold since Zach Apple and Blake Pieroni were members of Team USA's mixed 4x100m freestyle relay in 2019.
Josh Matheny earned his first world championships medal on Wednesday for his contributions to Team USA's 4x100-meter medley relay. Matheny was a member of the prelim quartet that earned the United States the No. 1 seed for the final, blasting a 58.45 split. The IU junior was seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke earlier this week and will swim the 200-meter race later in the meet.
Hafnaoui No. 2 Qualifier in 800 Free, King Takes Fourth in 100 Breast (July 25)
After earning a silver medal on Sunday in the 400-meter freestyle, Ahmed Hafnaoui continued his strong worlds performance in the 800-meter free heats on Tuesday. His 7:41.97 was second best in the heats, meaning he'll swim in lane five during the final which is set for 7 a.m. ET on Wednesday.
Lilly King was fourth in the women's 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:06.02.
Matheny Seventh in 100 Breast, Gan Shatters Own Sinagpore National Record (July 24)
Josh Matheny finished seventh in the world in the 100-meter breaststroke, going 59.45 in the championship heat. The World Championships debutant will also swim the 200 breast later this week.
Singaporean Ching Hwee Gan won the second of four heats in the 1,500-meter freestyle Monday morning, making history along the way. Her 16:20.88 blew away her previous national record time (16:31.48) by over 10 seconds. The NCAA silver medalist in the 1,650-yard freestyle, Gan finished 14th overall in the 1,500-meter race at worlds.
Lilly King will have a great shot at another World Championships medal as the No. 2 seed in the 100-meter breaststroke final, set for Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. ET. King went 59.45 on Monday to win her semifinal heat.
Representing Germany, Rafael Miroslaw finished 12th in the world in the 200 free after qualifying for the semifinal, where he dropped a 1:46.30.
Hafnaoui Sets All-Time Fifth-Fastest 400 Free, Earns Silver (July 23)
On the first day of pool swimming, second-year swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui - representing Tunisia - made history in the 400-meter freestyle final with an African record 3:40.70 - the fifth-fastest 400 free all-time. In a back and forth race with Sam Short, Hafanoui finished just .02 seconds behind the Australian to place second in the world in the race he won at the Olympics in Tokyo. His time was three seconds faster than his Olympic champion time (3:43.76).
Josh Matheny matched his personal best 59.20 in the 100-meter breaststroke to finish second in his semifinal heat and advance to the final. The 20-year old Matheny, the youngest final qualifier in the race by three years, will be the No. 7 seed in Monday's championship swim set for approximately 7 a.m. ET.
Tomer Frankel and Israel's 4x100-meter relay finished seventh in the world in 3:14.53. Frankel lead off the race the in 48.43. The quartet was Israel's first-ever relay to qualify for a final at World Championships. Frankel also finished 22nd individually in the 50-meter butterfly with a personal best 23.48.
Junior Ching Hwee Gan, representing Singapore, finished 24th in heats of the women's 400 free with a personal best 4:13.10.
Capobianco Fourth in Men's 3-Meter (July 20)
Andrew Capobianco placed fourth in the world in the men's 3-meter diving event. After grinding to become the ninth-place qualifier from the semifinal, Capobianco improved greatly on his performance to score 448.00 points in comparison to that 427.35-point performance. Five of Capobianco's six dives in the final scored at least 70 points, and he executed dives for 81.90 and 87.40 points in his final two attempts.
This marked the third World Championships for the 2020 Olympic medalist, previously competing at the 2017 games as well as the 2019 championships, where he won bronze in the mixed team event.
Denigan and USA Swimming closed open water swimming competition on Thursday, placing ninth in the mixed 4x1500-meter relay.
Denigan Finishes Top 20 in 5K (July 18)
Mariah Denigan competed in her second race of the week on Tuesday in the women's 5K. Denigan finished in a time of 1:01:18.30, good for 18th in the world.
USA Swimming's pool swimmers finished up training camp in Singapore and traveled to Fukuoka in preparation for their start of competition. They'll kick off racing on Saturday (July 22).
Parratto Earns Bronze Medal for Synchronized Diving (July 16)
Jessica Parratto and USA Diving teammate Delaney Schnell earned bronze for the United States on Sunday in the women's synchronized 10-meter diving event. The pair, who won silver in the event at the Tokyo Olympic Games two years ago, totaled 294.42 points through five dives to place third and secure another medal on the world stage. With the finish, Team USA earned an Olympic quota spot for the event in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Parratto and Schnell entered the final round in fifth place but nailed their final dive, a 5253B, for 74.52 points to leap onto the podium.
Denigan Impresses in 10K (July 15)
Two Hoosiers competed during the first day of action in Fukuoka. Junior and United States open water national team member Mariah Denigan swam the 10-kilometer race, where she finished eighth - seven spots better than her performance at last years world championships.
With the result, Denigan qualified for next year's open water world championships, where she will have a chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
At 19 years old, sophomore Maxwell Weinrich made his world championships debut in the mixed 10-meter synchronized diving event with fellow national champion Kaylee Bishop. The duo earned 256.02 points to finish 11th in the world.
