EAST LANSING, Mich. — Indiana men's soccer (3-3-2, 0-1-1 B1G) couldn't break No. 18-ranked Michigan State's (5-0-2, 1-0-1 B1G) undefeated start, falling 2-1 in the Big Ten road match at DeMartin Stadium.
IU came back from down 1-0 in the first half thanks to junior forward Samuel Sarver's second goal in as many matches. A 77th-minute penalty to MSU settled the match as the Hoosiers couldn't recover in the final moments.
KEY MOMENTS
• 6' – Opportunities came early for both teams as senior goalkeeper JT Harms was forced to make a diving save to his left in the early going.
• 11' – IU looked to be in first as sophomore forward Luka Bezerra played an incisive through ball to Sarver. Sarver's attempt made MSU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Zac Kelly stretch, and he put his leg out just in time to keep it out of his goal.
• 15' – Michigan State opened the scoring as freshman forward Richie Ludwig cut across the 18 from the right wing and fizzled a shot to the back post.
• 20' – A pinpoint pass from junior midfielder Patrick McDonald found Sarver past his mark and into the 18. Sarver blasted his equalizer off Kelly's hands and into the back of the net.
• 36' – Junior forward Tommy Mihalic saw a shot from distance trickle about a foot wide of goal.
• 45' – With the second score and an 8-6 shot advantage, IU had the momentum going into the second half.
• 47' – After Indiana had trouble clearing a free kick out of the box, Ludwig pushed a rebound uncomfortably close to the post but out of play.
• 58' – Coming from the left side, Mihalic cut in and blasted a shot on goal that the keeper was forced to save.
• 72' – Mihalic again caused trouble in the 72nd minute, curling a shot that Kelly fumbled in front of goal. Freshman forward Collins Oduro rushed to rebound it, but the MSU keeper pounced on it just in time.
• 77' – MSU sophomore Jonathan Stout cut inside the box from the left wing in front of freshman Justin Shreffler. Shreffler stuck a leg out, Stout went down, and the referee blew and pointed to the spot. After a lengthy review, the call stood, and junior midfielder Sean Kerrigan converted the spot kick.
NOTABLES
• Indiana fell to Michigan State for the first time since 2014 and 44-9-5 against the Spartans all-time.
