BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The challenge is great. Would you expect anything else?
Opportunity is great. Will Indiana take advantage of it?
Bouncing back from Purdue defeat means winning at Big Ten-leading Wisconsin on Friday night. It means defending, scoring, and competing at an elite level. It means, says Indiana senior guard Trey Galloway in so many words, fighting.
"At the end of the day, it's going out there, competing, and finding a way to get stops," he says. "That's the biggest thing."
The Hoosiers (12-6 overall, 4-3 in the Big Ten) need multiple big things against the No. 11/8 Badgers (13-4, 5-1), and it starts with toughness, particularly from the frontcourt.
Coach Mike Woodson wasn't happy with their performance against Purdue center Zach Edey, whose overpowering play was a major factor in Tuesday night's defeat.
"I've got to get my two big guys a little tougher," he says.
History favors the Badgers. They have won 23 of the last 27 meetings with Indiana, including 10 of the last 12. Coach Greg Gard is 6-0 against IU at the Kohl Center.
This season they are 9-1 at home, with the only loss to top-10 Tennessee in December. The Hoosiers haven't won at the Kohl Center since 1998.
Wisconsin had a six-game winning streak snapped with Tuesday night's 87-83 loss at Penn State. It has a half-game lead over Purdue in the Big Ten standings.
IU must avoid the fouling issues it had against the Boilers. The Badgers lead the Big Ten in free throw shooting, at 77.0%. They average 20.7 attempts per game.
Guard AJ Storr is the top free throw shooter at 84.7%. Guard John Blackwell is at 83.3%. Both rank in the top 10 in the conference.
Over the last three games, guard Max Klesmit has been an offensive catalyst by averaging 17.3 points while shooting 66.7% from the field and going 9-for-13 on 3-pointers.
Storr leads Wisconsin in scoring at 15.3 points. Steve Crowl, a 7-0 center, averages 12.0 points and 7.8 rebounds. Tyler Wahl, a 6-9 forward, averages 11.7 and 5.8. Guard Chucky Hepburn averages 8.0 points and leads the team in assists (68) and steals (33).
"We've got to get ready for Wisconsin and see where we go from here," Woodson says.
