BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Eleven athletes associated with Indiana swimming and diving will compete at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, kicking off this weekend in Doha, Qatar. Nine of those are current IU student-athletes or coaches.
Indiana is represented by Team USA head coaches in two disciplines. IU head diving coach is once again serving as USA Diving's head coach at the games, and associated head coach Cory Chitwood is in Doha as the open water swimming team's head coach.
IU athletes will first appear February 3 when Mariah Denigan competes in the 10-kilometer open water swim. Denigan finished eighth last summer, seven spots better than her world championships debut a year before, to qualify for this year's games. Four days later, Denigan will swim the 5K, in which she placed 18th in July. The IU junior can qualify for the 2024 Olympics with her performances in Qatar.
Diving kicks off February 4 with alum Andrew Capobianco and current IU junior Quinn Henninger teaming up in the men's synchronized 3-meter event. Capobianco, an Olympic silver medalist in this event, finished fourth in the solo event at last year's world championships. Two days later, alum Jessica Parratto will defend her world bronze medal in the women's synchronized 10-meter competition with long-time teammate Delaney Schnell. Junior Carson Tyler is Indiana's final diver to go, also competing in synchronized 10-meter February 8.
IU will also send four international swimmers on its current roster to Doha. Junior Ching Hwee Gan (400m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle) and freshman Mikkel Lee (50m butterfly) will represent Singapore with German junior Rafael Miroslaw (200m Freestyle) and French junior Kai Van Westering (100m backstroke, 200m Backstroke). Pool swimming competitions begin February 11, with both Singaporeans competing that day.
