Hoosiers Fall Short in Front of Wilkinson Hall Record Crowd

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A valiant effort from the Indiana Volleyball team (12-11, 5-8 B1G) came up short at Wilkinson Hall on Friday (Nov. 8) evening as No. 9 Purdue won a contested four-set match (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25) in Bloomington.
A Wilkinson Hall record 2,857 fans stuffed the gym, breaking the record of 2,725 set last October against Purdue. It was the third crowd of over 2,600 fans in the past two seasons. The Hoosiers had a chance to win set three but allowed Purdue to go on a 7-2 run and finish off the game. IU ran out of gas in set four as Purdue closed out the season sweep of its in-state rival.
The Hoosiers had a fantastic blocking night, led by seven stuffs from junior middle blocker Madi Sell. The Ballwin, Mo. native matched a career high with seven blocks as part of 11.0 total team rejections. Sell has had seven blocks on three different occasions this year as part of 73 in total on the season. IU out blocked Purdue for the first time since Oct. 9, 2019.
IU was led by 15 kills from junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles and 13 kills from junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum but hit just .194 as a team. Sell recorded seven kills on 10 errorless swings (.700). All five primary attackers had at least six kills while Haworth provided five as well. However, IU committed 16 unforced attacking errors.
Purdue outside hitter Eva Hudson racked up 26 kills in a dominant offensive effort. She hit .373 (26-7-51) on the evening and racked up 10 digs and five blocks. Purdue was great defensively, digging 57 balls with just two reception errors. Setter Taylor Anderson dished out 45 assists as the visitors hit .305 on the night.
The Hoosiers kept Purdue's other primary offensive options in check. Star sophomore outside hitter Chloe Chicoine only had four kills and hit .042. Senior middle blocker Raven Colvin had seven kills but committed five errors. The Boilermakers got a boost off the bench from redshirt sophomore Lizzie Carr with 10 kills.
On the season, IU is 8-3 at home with all three losses coming to top-10 opponents. The Hoosiers will get a crack at another top-20 opponent on Sunday (Nov. 10) as No. 20 USC comes to Wilkinson Hall. First serve will come at 4:00 PM in Bloomington.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: Purdue 25, Indiana 21
The two teams battled back and forth in the opening set before Purdue settled into the match with a big victory in game one. IU held their own with four blocks but fell victim to four service errors. The Boilermakers had 15 kills in comparison to the Hoosiers' 12 while outhitting the hosts .257-.222 in set one. Setter Camryn Haworth had nine assists, four digs, two kills and an ace but Purdue had too many answers defensively down the stretch.
• IU's lead got as big as three early on as Haworth opened up the set from the end line. She had an ace before junior Avry Tatum finished off a kill to extend the early advantage to 10-7. The three-point lead was as big as it would get in game one.
• The Hoosiers headed into the media timeout up two points (15-13) after back-to-back blocks from junior Madi Sell and graduate student Delaynie Maple. Purdue opposite Kenna Wollard got an early hook from the match after three attacking errors in the opening 31 points.
• Junior Candela Alonso-Corcelles gave the hosts a lead at 20-19 following a kill but it would be the last time it led in the set. Purdue ended the set on a 6-1 run, capped off by a kill from junior outside hitter Eva Hudson and redshirt sophomore opposite Lizzie Carr.
Set 2: Indiana 25, Purdue 21
The Hoosiers played their best set of the night in game two, hitting .395 (19-4-38) in route to a comfortable 25-21 set victory. Tatum had seven kills on nine errorless swings (.779) while her setter, Haworth, dished out 14 assists on IU's 19 kills. Sell and fifth-year senior outside hitter Morgan Geddes each had three kills. IU sided out at 76 percent (16-21) in game two and allowed zero service aces from Purdue.
• After exchanging early points in set two, IU took the lead for good at 11-10. A series of tips from Hudson for points was quickly corrected as Tatum rejected her on a soft, off-speed attempt. The Hoosiers got the lead to 15-13 at the media timeout following a kill from Sell.
• From the media timeout, IU opened up a 7-3 run to take its biggest lead of the night at 22-16 (six points). Out of a Purdue timeout, Geddes terminated off the block to put the home team in a comfortable position.
• Purdue made things close down the stretch but IU finished off the final two points thanks to a double block from Sell and Haworth and a kill from Sell on set point.
Set 3: Purdue 25, Indiana 22
IU had a big chance to win set three but let it – and the match – slip away late. The Hoosiers hit just .000 (11-11-40) but remained with a fighting chance in the set due to four service errors from the Boilermakers. Tatum and Alonso-Corcelles combined to hit negative in game three (6-9-23), hurting IU's chances at a victory in the set. Purdue scored the final three points to take a firm lead in the match.
• Maple served IU on a 5-0 run early in game three to open up a 10-8 advantage. During the run, Sell had a hand in a pair of blocks. That included a massive rejection of Purdue middle blocker Raven Colvin.
• Purdue was unsuccessful in overturning a challenge midway through the set as IU took a 16-14 advantage on an attacking error from Colvin. Out of the review break, IU set up a triple block with Purdue out of system. However, Hudson was able to work the Boilermakers out of trouble and worked a kill down the line. The Boilermakers got the match back level at 18-all.
• IU had an amazing chance to put away the set in the red zone but again fell victim to its own mistakes. Up 20-18, IU gave away the ensuing two points on a service error from Maple and a setting error from Haworth. Sell quickly corrected on a kill to go up 21-20 but Purdue closed on a 5-1 run from there. Tatum was blocked one-on-one by Hudson on the slide to close game three.
Set 4: Purdue 25, Indiana 17
Purdue finally blew the match open in game four, capitalizing on a tired IU squad. Purdue hit a resounding .552 (19-3-29) in set four with no answers from the Hoosiers' defense. Hudson had 12 of those 19 kills, hitting .647 in a dominant fourth set. The Hoosiers managed just 10 kills (.167). Geddes had zero kills on six swings with three errors. IU is still struggling to find production from that position.
• IU tied things at 8-all following a kill from Haworth but Purdue pushed the lead back to three points (11-8) on the back of Hudson and redshirt senior middle blocker Lourdes Myers. The Boilermakers held a 15-12 advantage at the media timeout.
• The Hoosiers had multiple chances to shrink the gap but had no answers from Hudson on an outstanding night. She scored five of Purdue's final six points on kills, most of them coming out of system. She scored match point for Purdue to finish off the match.
