11/6/2024 3:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – This upcoming weekend features the biggest set of matches at Wilkinson Hall since the gym opened its doors in 2019. Fresh off three-straight wins, the Indiana Volleyball team (12-10, 5-7 B1G) returns home to Bloomington for a pair of contests against top-20 foes.
On its own floor, the Hoosiers are 8-2 this season. The first loss, against No. 3 Penn State, was decided by just five points, The second loss came against No. 8 Wisconsin without a pair of key starters. Now starting to get healthy, IU will make a run at trying to beat No. 9 Purdue and No. 20 USC inside the friendly confines of Wilkinson Hall.
Juniors Candela Alonso-Corcelles and Avry Tatum led IU to a pair of wins over Rutgers and Maryland last weekend. The two averaged 4.86 and 4.71 kills per set respectively as the Hoosiers extended their winning streak out to three matches. Both players recorded 20-kill efforts in the win at Rutgers.
Senior setter Camryn Haworth looked more like her normal self after sitting out the Wisconsin match through injury. She averaged over 11.70 assists per set and 3.00 digs per set. Her five service aces over the weekend helped her break the program's all-time aces record (201). She also tallied her 30th career double-double against Rutgers with 49 assists and 14 digs.
IU's block, which has struggled at points this year, has been great over the past three games. IU is averaging 2.90 blocks per set on the three-match winning streak. Sophomore middle blocker Ava Vickers has 17 blocks in the last three matches (1.70 per set). She matched a career high with seven at Rutgers on Friday (Nov. 1).
The Hoosiers will play in front of a Sold Out crowd on Friday night against Purdue. IU has never beaten a top-15 opponent in three-consecutive seasons, something that could change this weekend. Additionally, IU has never won back-to-back regular season games against ranked opponents in program history.
Friday's match will begin at 7:00 PM against Purdue. It is a "White Out" with all fans asked to wear white in support of the home side. Sunday's match, due to schedule conflicts with men's basketball, starts at 4:00 PM in Wilkinson Hall.

Stat Notes
• Junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum has the highest attacking percentage (.306) of any player averaging at least 3.40 kills per set. She has eight matches with at least 14 kills while hitting .333 this season. She is on a run of three-straight matches with at least 10 kills.
• Senior setter Camryn Haworth's all-around performance during her four years has taken her into another elite club in Big Ten history. She joins Olympian Micha Hancock (Penn State) as the only two league players in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) to record 3,500 assists, 800 digs, 300 kills, 200 aces and 150 blocks in a career.
• Haworth is the only Big Ten setter this year averaging 10.00 assists per set, 2.00 digs per set, 0.80 kills per set and 0.40 aces per set. She is second among league setters in aces (37) and fourth in kills (68).
Notable
Back on Track
• After getting a pair of players (Camryn Haworth and Avry Tatum) back from injury, IU has responded by reeling off three-straight victories. It's the third-straight season that the Hoosiers have had a conference winning streak of at least three matches.
• Head coach Steve Aird and team get into the final eight games of the regular season that includes five matches at home. Just three ranked opponents remain on the slate, two at home, opening up the chance to pick up more wins in the month of November.
Rivalry Renewed
• Purdue heads to Wilkinson Hall on Friday night as the programs prepare to meet for the 114th time all-time. A sold-out crowd will welcome the Boilermakers to Bloomington. IU will look to challenge the program attendance record for the second-straight season.
• The Boilermakers won the contest in West Lafayette in October as IU struggled through the match with a number of injuries. Now on its home court, the Hoosiers will look to win back-to-back home games over its rival for the first time since 2001-2002.
California Connection
• When USC visits on Sunday, IU fans will see a pair of familiar faces. Grae Gosnell, who played four years in Bloomington and earned her undergraduate degree from IU, will make her maiden trip back home with the Trojans. She transferred there in the offseason.
• USC associate head coach Spencer McLachlin coached for IU in 2022 before moving back to California with his wife and children to be back closer to family. On the IU side, Delaynie Maple, who was a four-time National Champion with the Women of Troy on the Beach, will play USC on the indoor court for the first time. She owns a degree from USC.
Dynamic Duo
• Against Rutgers, juniors Candela Alonso-Corcelles (23) and Avry Tatum (20) became the first pair of IU teammates since 2010 to each record 20+ kills in a single match. The last duo to do so was Ashley Benson and Jordan Haverly against Miami (Fla.).
• The two followed that up against Maryland by reaching double-figure kills in the third-straight match. It's the 10th time the pair of Hoosiers has done that this season. In such matches, IU is 8-2 this year with four of those wins coming in Big Ten play.
Record Breaking Weekend
• Senior setter Camryn Haworth broke the program's all-time aces record on Friday night in Piscataway. She finished the weekend with five aces, taking her all-time tally to 201 in her prolific career.
• She becomes the fourth Big Ten player in rally-era history to reach the threshold, joining Micha Hancock (Penn State), Emily Danks (Ohio State) and Raina Terry (Illinois) in the club.
The Path to a Winning Season
• IU needs to finish just 4-4 down the stretch to record back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. If the Hoosiers reached five wins in their last eight, it would set a program record for Big Ten wins in a three-year stretch (30).
• This program has never won 10+ plus Big Ten games in back-to-back seasons. The Hoosiers could accomplish that with five wins in their last eight games.
Scouting the Opponent
Purdue (18-5, 9-3 B1G)
• Purdue is the first team that IU will meet twice this year. The Hoosiers still have to play Ohio State and Illinois for a second time late in the season. Purdue beat a banged-up IU team in October at Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers won games with Maryland and Rutgers last weekend after being swept in commanding fashion by Wisconsin.
• Eva Hudson (4.48 k/ps) and Chloe Chicoine (3.27 k/ps) lead one of the nation's most electric offensive duos. Setter Taylor Anderson gets them the ball at an effective clip, averaging 10.85 assists per set. As a team, Purdue hits .277 on the year.
• Purdue has always been known as an elite defensive team and this year is no different. Five different players average over 2.00 digs per set. Libero Ali Hornung is third in the Big Ten at 3.99 digs per set. Chicoine (2.82) and Hudson (2.40) are two of the best defensive six-rotation outsides in the country.
USC (16-6, 8-4 B1G)
• The Trojans make their first trip to Bloomington this weekend as they continue their debut campaign in the Big Ten. USC has won its last two matches after dropping contests with Michigan State and Penn State the week before. It will open its weekend at Illinois in Champaign.
• Ally Batenhorst, a transfer from Nebraska, leads the way offensively with 320 kills (3.76 per set). She has taken over 300 more swings than the next best player on the roster. She averages 4.47 points per set and is hitting .237 this year.
• Veteran setter Mia Tuaniga runs a high-powered offense. She averages 9.99 assists per set and is well known for her lethal top-spin jump serve. She also has 57 kills and is crafty at the net. She is one of two active Big Ten setters with over 4,000 assists.
• Led by Tyrah Ariail, USC is one of the best blocking teams in the country. Five different players have more than 60 blocks this season. As a team, the Trojans average 2.94 blocks per set.
• Much like IU, USC's kryptonite has been a high number of errors both offensively and from the service line. The Trojans have the fifth most attacking errors (442) in the league and the most service errors (269). IU is sixth and second in those respective categories.
Inside the Series
Purdue
• Purdue has won 39 of the past 43 meetings in the series, firmly dictating the affairs between the two sides. IU won last year at Wilkinson Hall, breaking a losing streak that dated back to 2012. The Hoosiers are looking for their first win ever against any of the new west coast programs.
