Indiana Shuts Out N.C. Central in Final Day of NFCA Leadoff Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– On the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, Indiana (4-1) won in a low-scoring defensive clinic, 4-0, against N.C. Central (1-4) on Sunday morning.
It was a successful first weekend for the Hoosiers, tallying wins over No. 15 Oregon, Army, Kansas and N.C. Central. The only loss came to No. 5 Clemson in a 3-2 final score.
Junior Brianna Copeland was named to the All-Tournament Team. Copeland was key for the Hoosiers at the plate and in the circle, recording a triple and home run in the opening night win against No. 15 Oregon, while also going 2-1 in the circle with a 1.37 ERA and 18 strikeouts.

KEY MOMENTS
• North Carolina Central threatened to score with a runner on third base in the top of the first, but sophomore Sophie Kleiman struck out NCCU's Nichols to get out of the inning.
• Indiana got on the board with a run scored in the bottom of the second inning to lead 1-0. Freshman Aly VanBrandt tripled followed by an RBI from junior Kinsey Mitchell to score VanBrandt.
• Just two at-bats after VanBrandt's triple, freshman Alex Cooper hit a triple, as well.
• Indiana added two more runs in the bottom of the third when junior Taylor Minnick hit a ball down the right field line to score sophomore Cassidy Kettleman. A few at-bats later, Freshman Tristian Thompson hit a sac fly to right field to score Aaliyah Andrews to push the lead to 3-0.
• Indiana would score its fourth and final run in the bottom of the fourth on another sacrifice, when Copeland hit one out to right field to score senior Brooke Benson.
• Senior Macy Montgomery entered the game in the sixth inning and closed it out, only allowing one hit in the final two innings.
NOTABLES
• In her second start of the season, Kleiman picked up her first win.
• Kleiman threw a season-high eight strikeouts in the win.
• Montgomery came in relief for the game's final two innings, it was her second appearance of the season.
• VanBrandt recorded her first two career hits, with her first being a triple.
• Cooper's triple was her first extra base hit of her career.
