Indiana Splits on Opening Night of Hillenbrand Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. ––– Indiana went 1-1 in their first day of play in the Hillenbrand Invitational on Friday night.
The Hoosiers defeated Central Michigan in the early game, 8-0, after five innings and then fell to No. 17 Arizona, 6-3, in the afternoon. After both contests, Indiana's record now stands at 9-3 overall.
GAME 1: INDIANA 8, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 0 (F/5)

KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana did the majority of their damage in the bottom of the second inning, Alex Cooper, Brooke Benson, Cora Bassett and Brianna Copeland all chipped in with RBIs to put Indiana in front 5-0 early on. Benson and Bassett both recorded doubles.
• To end the game on run-rule, Cora Bassett hit a hard-hit single to right field and scored Brooke Benson to end the game at 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
• Sophie Kleiman pitched a no-hitter, never allowing Central Michigan's offense to get going throughout the game.
• Aly VanBrandt hit a single in the top of the first to score Cassidy Kettleman and put Indiana up 1-0 in the first inning.
• Arizona responded to make it a 1-1 game in the bottom of the first with a home run to center field from Carlie Scupin.
• Sarah Stone homered to right center field in the fourth inning to give Indiana the lead back, 3-1.
• Arizona added on four runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth to make it a 6-3 final score.

• Indiana sophomore Sophie Kleiman threw her first career no-hitter against the Chippeawas.
• Indiana scored in spurts against Central Michigan, recording all of their runs in either the second or fifth innings.
• Freshman Aly VanBrandt continues to hit the ball well in her first collegiate season, she's record two or more hits in each of her last three games.
• Junior Sarah Stone's home run was her first of the season.
• Redshirt senior Cora Bassett has recorded a hit in six of her last seven games.
• This was the second season in a row that Indiana has faced Arizona.
