Indiana Defeats Drake, Falls to No. 17 Arizona in 14-Inning Game

TUCSON, Ariz. ––– Indiana Softball posted a solid, 6-2 win over Drake, and lost narrowly, 10-9, in a 14-inning marathon game at No. 17 Arizona on Saturday night in the Hillenbrand Invitational.
After today's results, Indiana's record now stands at 10-4 overall with one game left to play in the Hillebrand Invitational.
GAME 1: INDIANA 6, DRAKE 2
GAME 2: ARIZONA 10, INDIANA 9 (F/14)
KEY MOMENTS (vs. Drake)
• After trailing against Drake, 1-0, in the first two innings, senior Brooke Benson hit a home run to center field to tie the game at 1-1.
• Just two batters later, junior Brianna Copeland followed suit from Benson and hit a home run of her own to left center and gave Indiana the lead, 2-1.
• The Hoosiers extended their lead to 3-1 on a double from sophomore Avery Parker, scoring junior Sarah Stone.
• Freshman Alex Cooper hit the Hoosiers' third home run of the day in the fifth inning on a solo shot to right field. Later in the inning, junior Taylor Minnick ripped an RBI-single to center field to score Cora Bassett and bring the Hoosiers' advantage to 5-1.
• Parker scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 6-1.
KEY MOMENTS (vs. Arizona)
• After being tied 1-1 through the first two innings, Bassett launched a home run to left field to put Indiana ahead of Arizona, 2-1 in the third.
• Arizona would score two more runs in the third, but Copeland tied the game with the Wildcats again at 3-3 with a 5th inning homer.
• In her first appearance of the game, sophomore Chloe Geijer hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Hoosiers up 4-3.
• Arizona would tie the game at 4-4 and have the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Hoosiers got out of the jam when Arizona's Taylor Biehl grounded out to second.
• Each team scored a run in the eighth inning to make it a 5-5 game and continue to nine innings. The game continued as tied at 5-5 with each team failing to score in the ninth.
• The Hoosiers and Wildcats would trade runs in both 10th and 11th innings to reach a score of 7-7.
• Arizona threatened in the bottom of the 12th inning, but the Hoosiers battled out of it. With the score tied at 7-7, the bases were loaded with no outs. The first out came on a pop out to shallow center field with no runners advancing. Then, Alex Cooper caught a line drive at third base and got to the bag before the runner could get back for the unassisted double play.
• Indiana didn't score again in the 13th, and also worked its way out of another bases loaded jam to stay alive at 7-7 through 13 innings.
• With two runners on in the top of the 14th inning, Cooper hit a line-drive singled to center field and scored two runners on the play for Indiana to take the lead back, 9-7.
• In the bottom of the 14th, Arizona got another bases loaded situation lined up and scored three consecutive runs on three batters to win it, 10-9.
