Indiana Diving's Vision for a New Dryland Room
2/29/2024 10:07:00 AM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving, Varsity Club
Now is the time to support Indiana Diving as we maintain our leadership status in the world of diving and training methods.
We recently faced an urgent facility need due to the expiration of our leased space for our dryland training. We are excited to provide our IU Diving family with this video that details our vision for our new state-of-the-art dryland room exclusively for Indiana Diving. This vision includes the creation of a space that will build on our tradition of innovation in this area, and couple that with the ability to utilize new techniques and technology. If this project comes to fruition, it will catapult us into the lead in the world of intercollegiate diving.
Here's a sneak peak about what will be involved.
Pulley and Rope
Hobie Billingsley was an innovator 60-plus years ago when he hung pulleys above a trampoline in the HPER. We have created new pulley configurations that can simulate the feeling of the dive better and allow the diver to "free fall" while preforming the come out technique they want to use over the water. Every training station will have this new pulley configuration.
Foam Block Pit
When I first arrived at IU 10 years ago, I saw drawings in Coach Jeff Huber's files with plans for a dryland room that included a foam block pit. This new equipment will allow our divers to try more difficult and dangerous dives in the dryland environment. No need for a spotting belt, the divers will gain confidence and the "air awareness" in the safety of our new dryland training room.
Video and Training Analytics
Video replay in the practice setting has been part of diving since the 90's. Our collaboration with Sideline Scout has not only improved the quality of video replay to teach diving, it has given us the ability to get the video to the divers on their iPads as they walk out the door. We have also been able to track the quality of their training with this new technology, allowing us to make data driven decisions when it comes to getting a competitive advantage.
Location, Location, Location
This new location for our dryland room is just minutes from the pool and the freshman dorms. This will allow us to utilize this space every day. Divers will be able to go straight from the Pulley and Ropes to the water, right from trying a new dive in the Foam Block Pit to trying it at the CBAC, and watch the workout they did with Video and Training Analytics in the gym as they leave workout and head to class.
This new space will not only allow us to continue building champions, it will also attract the best talent in the county, feeding the flame of IU diving.
We take pride in our goal of creating the most advanced dryland training facility, and would love to have your support. No one knows better than each of you the impact that this can have on the success of our program, and on our ability to help future Hoosiers fulfill their dreams of competing and succeeding on the highest levels on the Big Ten, NCAA, and international levels.
We need your support! We hope that you will use the link above to make a contribution through the IU Diving Program fund. If you have additional questions about this project please contact Kelly Bomba (kbomba@indiana.edu) or Anne Crawford (amcraw@indiana.edu).
