Indiana Opens Season with win over No. 15 Oregon in Clearwater

CLEARWATER, Fla. –––– In a complete effort at the plate and in the field, Indiana (1-0) opened its 2024 campaign with a win over No. 15 Oregon (0-1) on Thursday night in the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
INDIANA 7, Oregon 5
KEY MOMENTS
• It was all fireworks in the first inning as the Hoosiers scored within two at bats. Cora Bassett singled and was immediately followed by a triple from Brianna Copeland to get Indiana on the board.
• Later in the inning, Avery Parker singled down the left field line to put Indiana up 2-0.
• Oregon scored one in the bottom of the first inning to make it 2-1.
• In her second at-bat, Copeland delivered yet again, hitting a home run past the wall in left center field to score three and extend Indiana's lead to 5-1.
• Oregon followed up with a home run of their own in the bottom of the second period to make it a 5-3 game.
• Junior Taylor Minnick had a hard-hit single up the middle to score two more Hoosier runs and make it 7-3 in the top of the fourth.
• Oregon slowly clawed back into the game as it scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-5 game.
• In the bottom of the seventh, Brianna Copeland sat down three down straight batters to end the game.
NOTABLES
• In 5.1 innings of work in the circle, Copeland got the win and had six strikeouts.
• At the plate, Copeland went 2-for-3, including four RBIs, a triple and a home run. It was only the third time Copeland posted a game with both a triple and home run and the first since a win over Wisconsin Green Bay (3/4/23).
• Bassett was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double in the fourth inning.
• Avery Parker stole second in the first inning.
• Freshman Alex Cooper made her first collegiate start.
• Freshman Aly VanBrandt made her first collegiate appearance.
