Indiana Softball to Begin Florida Trip with Midweek Game at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. –––– Indiana Softball will play five games over spring break in the Sunshine State, starting with a Wednesday matchup at Florida Atlantic.
The Hoosiers enter the game on a nine-game win streak, including winning the last eight all in its first two home weekends after hosting the Hoosier Classic and Indiana Invite.

The Hoosiers enter the game on a nine-game win streak, including winning the last eight all in its first two home weekends after hosting the Hoosier Classic and Indiana Invite.
QUICK HITTERS:
- For the second time this season, Indiana is set to play in the state of Florida. Indiana opened the 2024 campaign at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla., going 4-1 in the event. This week, the Hoosiers will play a midweek game at FAU and then take on the Florida Tournament, going against Mercer and Florida.
- The Hoosiers enter this week on a nine-game win streak, dating back to the streak's start on Sunday, February 25 in the win over Marshall at the Hillenbrand Invitational.
- After the Marshall win, Indiana swept all of their opponents across their two opening home weekends of the Hoosier Classic and Indiana Invite.
- Over the span of the win streak, Indiana has won seven of those nine games by four runs or more, including four wins by run-rule.
- This will be the last week of full non-conference competition as Big Ten play is set to begin next weekend.
LAST TIME OUT:
- The Hoosiers were highly successful in last weekend's Indiana Invite, posting a 4-0 weekend at Andy Mohr Field.
- The event had its schedule altered due to weather, as it was originally set to be from Friday to Sunday, but it ended up being a Saturday through Monday tournament.
- The Hoosiers only allowed a total of three runs across their four games in the weekend, including two shutouts and two wins by run-rule.
- Indiana picked up two wins over Oakland and a win over both IUPUI and Dayton in the Indiana Invite.
- The matchup against IUPUI pitted Indiana head coach Shonda Stanton against her former program as her first season as a Division I head coach was coaching the Jaguars in 1999 when they went 27-25.
- Juniors Brianna Copeland and Sarah Stone both had great weekends at the plate, hitting. 600 and .545, respectively. The duo also combined for nine RBI.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
- Florida Atlantic is off to a great start to the 2024 season, posting a 20-6 record thus far.
- The Owls opened the season with three home tournaments, where they went 14-4 and faced 14 different opponents in those games.
- Most recently, FAU played its first conference series of the season, going 2-1 on the road at Wichita State for the first weekend of conference play in the American Athletic Conference.
- This is the program's first season as part of the American Athletic Conference after previously playing in Conference USA.
- Of FAU's 20 wins, they own a handful against common opponents who are part of Indiana's schedule including Michigan State, Louisville and Michigan. FAU also lost in a 3-2 game to Penn State.
SERIES NOTES:
- Indiana is 3-0 all-time against Florida Atlantic.
- This will be the first meeting between the two programs since the 2022 season.
BIG-TIME BRI:
- Junior Brianna Copeland has been dominant as ever both at the plate and in the circle for the Hoosiers.
- Copeland has posted 74 strikeouts and a 1.23 ERA with 62.2 innings of work. She has a 10-3 record and has only allowed 11 earned runs all season.
- At bat, Copeland is hitting for a .373 average with five home runs and 17 RBI.
MINNICK MANIA:
- Junior Taylor Minnick picked up right where she left off from her All-American sophomore season in 2023.
- In the first four weekends, Minnick has hit for a .358 batting average with 24 hits and 24 RBI. The junior has logged three doubles, one triple and two home runs.
- Minnick hit home runs on back-to-back days in the Hoosier Classic.
CONTROL IN THE CIRCLE:
- Indiana's pitching staff has been a reliable force for the Hoosiers through the season's early window.
- Copeland is leading the charge with 62.2 innings of work and 74 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.23. She has only allowed 11 earned runs all season and is holding opposing hitters to a .191 batting average.
- Sophomore Sophie Kleiman also has a 0.71 ERA and 46 strikeouts while going 6-0. She threw her first career no-hitter against Central Michigan on Feb. 23.
- Senior Macy Montgomery made the best start of her career in a six-inning complete game win over FAMU, throwing 10 strikeouts and only allowing four hits while not giving up a run.
- Junior Heather Johnson owns a 1-1 mark and has been a part of some impressive victories. She made the start in the season-opening win against No. 15 Oregon and a run-rule win over Army.
LEADING IT OFF:
- Indiana redshirt senior Cora Bassett has been a sparkplug in the Hoosier lineup, serving as the routine leadoff hitter and the ignition to the offense.
- Bassett is hitting for a .389 average with 28 hits and 15 RBI. In the Hoosier Classic, she had two home runs, including one inside the park home run.
