BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 16-ranked Indiana rowing won 16 of 21 races at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational this weekend on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, capped by a Sunday (March 17) in which the Hoosiers won six of their seven races.
IU managed a 12-2 head-to-head record over seven races Sunday and totaled a 39-6 mark through three sessions at the regatta. The Hoosiers faced crews from No. 13 Duke, RV Wisconsin, RV Alabama, Clemson, Navy, North Carolina, Notre Dame and San Diego over the two days.
"I am really proud of the whole team this weekend," IU head rowing coach Steve Peterson said. "Obviously, we won a lot of races, but more importantly it was how we won them. We've been focusing in on the middle part of our races, the base rhythm, and keeping calm throughout the race. I was excited to see all our boats, from the top varsity to our novice crews, doing that.
"Now we will build upon that solid foundation as we prepare for next weekend against Yale, Penn, Syracuse and Harvard."
Indiana's Varsity Eight went 3-for-3 and 7-0 head-to-head on the weekend, finishing with a time of 6:21.580 to outpace RV Alabama (6:25.666) and Clemson (6:27.259). IU's top boat beat Duke (6:19.715) and Notre Dame (6:28.213) with a time of 6:18.639 Saturday afternoon after beating Wisconsin (6:25.966), Navy (6:28.504) and San Diego (6:30.461) in 6:20.564 in its debut Saturday morning. Its lineup was steady, featuring senior coxswain Katherine Nelson, senior Sophie Bowden, sophomore Emily Bowden, graduate transfer Isabel Velasquez, redshirt senior Piper Maaka, freshman Nico Daly, graduate student Annabel Oertel, senior Niamh Monk and freshman Maddison Shanks.
"It was a really exciting weekend for our team," Sophie Bowden said. "The commitment and grit all the girls have been putting in to practice everyday really showed up on the water, and it's nice to see the hard work pay off. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much faster this team can go and how much we can push our goals."
IU's Varsity, Third Varsity Four and Second Novice 8 also had unblemished weekend records, winning at all three sessions.
"This weekend in Oak Ridge was the perfect start to our season," graduate transfer Aidan McIntyre said. "Our Varsity Four crew had an awesome weekend, winning every single race with some solid margins. It felt amazing to see all the hard work from our training over the past year pay off. I can't wait to carry this momentum into the races ahead!"
