Indiana Has Three Advance in Session I

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –––– Indiana Wrestling started competition in the 2024 NCAA Championships on Thursday morning at the T-Mobile Center with six Hoosiers competing.
No. 32 Cayden Rooks (133), No. 23 Dan Fongaro (141), No. 17 Graham Rooks (149), No. 11 Brayton Lee (157), No. 17 Tyler Lillard (165) and No. 32 Nick Willham (285) all competed in the postseason action.
Session I only consisted of preliminary round matches and the first round of the championship bracket.
Fongaro, Graham Rooks and Lee all advanced to the second round of the championship bracket.
MATCH RECAPS
Preliminary Matches
No. 32 Cayden Rooks and No. 32 Nick Willham each opened the championships in a preliminary match to wrestle into the tournament's field.
Willham had his way against No. 33 Jordan Greer (Ohio), not allowing a takedown and scoring a handful of his own in an 11-4 win.
Rooks lost in a close battle to No. 33 Dyson Dunham (Virginia Military Institute) by decision, 9-5.
First Round Matches
The opening round of the championship bracket started off with a bang for the Hoosiers as No. 23 Dan Fongaro took on No. 10 Tagen Jamison (Oklahoma State). Fongaro scored the first takedown of the match to go up 3-0, Jamison would follow up with a few of his own to take a 7-4 lead after the first.
Fongaro rode Jamison out the entire second period to build up riding time advantage and then would escape at the start of the third period for it to be a 7-5 match. About a minute into the third period, Fongaro got a handle of Jamison's right leg and then quickly worked around for a takedown.
Jamison would escape to make it 8-8, but Fongaro won 9-8 with the riding time point.
Not long after Fongaro won, No. 17 Graham Rooks followed up with a win over No. 16 Kelvin Griffin (Lehigh).
Griffin scored early in the first period to go up 3-0, and then Rooks didn't allow a takedown for the remainder of the match. He would also go on to score three of his own throughout the bout, while also completing a reversal in the third period to defeat Griffin by decision, 12-5.
In his first NCAA Tournament action since 2021, No. 11 Brayton Lee opened the tournament with a win over No. 22 DJ McGee (George Mason). Lee and McGee were all knotted up at 1-1 through regulation.
In overtime, it didn't take long for Lee to get control and take down McGee for the 4-1 win in Sudden Victory.
No. 17 Tyler Lillard and No. 32 Nick Willham both fell in their first round matches and are now in the wrestlebacks.
