ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Skylar Stidam claimed his first Big Ten title in the 5k with a 57.19 final split on Sunday at U-M Track and Field Stadium.
Michigan's Luke Venhuizen held the lead for the last three laps before he picked up the pace and lost him through the final lap.
"Skylar ran an incredible race," Associate Track and Field coach Eric Heins said. "He covered every move by his competitors in order to give himself a chance to win with a final sprint. This victory was well earned and a testament to Skylar's dedication and resilience."
The Floyds Knobs, Ind. native is the first to medal in the 5,000m since Ben Veatch in 2021 and is the 15th Hoosier to win the event outdoors.
The Hoosiers also picked up five top-three finishes to earn B1G medals while IU landed on the podium in 12 events.
The men's squad tallied 52 points on the day to finish fifth while the women scored in the 400 meter and the 4x400 meter relay.
"We saw great efforts in the final day of the championship meet with our athletes taking advantage of the opportunity to compete in an Indiana uniform," assistant coach Valerie Brown said.
"While we would have loved to walk away with more, we are proud of the efforts. The highlights of the day would have be the performances of Skylar, Antonio, and the relays."
"Those young men along with all of our seniors left their mark on our program. As we turn the page and focus on first rounds, we are looking forward to more from this group."
Camden Marshall ran a solid race in the 800 meters after he finished runner-up in the event. He ran a time of 1:48.17.
Antonio Laidler had himself a day! He tied his personal best of 10.19 for a runner-up finish in the 100 meters. He also added points in the 200 meters. He also contributed points with a fifth-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay and an eighth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.
Kenisha Phillips added eight points after she earned her second Big Ten silver medal in the 400 meters. She crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 52.35, the second-fastest time in program history.
