9/12/2024 10:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a grueling stretch of five matches in seven days, the Indiana Volleyball team (3-2, 0-0) returns home for the Indiana Invitational this weekend. Chicago State, Southern Indiana and Ball State will make the trip to Bloomington as each team gets set to play three matches.
IU will play four of its final five non-conference games inside the confines of Wilkinson Hall, beginning with Chicago State on Friday (Sept. 13) afternoon. The Hoosiers will play their only doubleheader of the season this Friday, meeting Southern Indiana in the nightcap. The non-conference slate ends with a return trip from Notre Dame in over a week's time (Sept. 22).
The Hoosiers were tested early this past week, playing a pair of programs currently in the top-20 of the AVCA rankings. Defending national champions Texas beat IU in straight sets while Miami (Fla.) got past the Hoosiers in four games. IU played Miami close in a match separated by just two total points.
Juniors Avry Tatum and Candela Alonso-Corcelles are enjoying outstanding seasons, averaging 3.32 and 3.16 kills per set respectively. Each player has gone for 10+ kills on four different occasions. Both players are tied for the team lead in aces (9) with senior setter Camryn Haworth. Tatum leads the team with 63 kills while Alonso-Corcelles is in a close second at 60 putaways.
If the Hoosiers can pull off three wins at their home invitational, it will be the first 6-2 start to a season since 2019. A trio of wins would give IU a 4-0 start to its home slate for the second-straight campaign. In addition to matches against Chicago State and Southern Indiana, IU will close the weekend against Ball State on Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon.

Stat Trends
• The Hoosiers have had at least seven aces in all five matches this season. Last year, IU had seven-or-more aces on 14 different occasions. Four different players this year have at least five aces including Avry Tatum (9), Candela Alonso-Corcelles (9) and Camryn Haworth (9).
Notable
Return Home
• After playing four of five games away from home to start the season, IU will close out the preseason slate with four of five home matches. The Indiana Invitational will see Ball State, Chicago State and Southern Indiana visit town. IU will also take on Notre Dame in a home-and-home next weekend.
Veteran Core, Veteran League
• IU will head into the 2024 season with a collection of players who have seen lots of Big Ten volleyball in their collegiate tenure. IU has seven seniors, including five who have spent their whole careers in Bloomington.
• Camryn Haworth, Mady Saris and Morgan Geddes have all played in 90 career matches or more. Transfer Delaynie Maple (USC Beach) won four national titles in the sand and comes to IU with a wide variety of volleyball expertise.
Took a Punch, Responded Nicely
• Texas, the two-time defending champions, unveiled its 2023 National Championship banner last Thursday when the Hoosiers visited town. Led by a collection of All-Americans, Texas took it to IU in the first set with a 25-8 win. The Hoosiers bounced back, playing contested second and third sets before falling in three.
• IU's contest on Friday against Miami (Fla.) was much more competitive. The total score was separated by just two points but the Hurricanes won a pair of tight sets (23-25, 22-25) to win in four games. The Hoosiers had more blocks, aces and fewer attacking errors. Miami had more kills by a large margin.
Time to Get on a Roll
• With a whole week to practice at home, IU is hoping to find some rhythm in its team before the next three matches. The Hoosiers missed pieces all over the floor in training camp and are attempting to find connection with most of their players finally back without limitations. Expect IU's offense and defense to be much crisper this weekend.
All-Time Countdown
• Senior setter Camryn Haworth and outside hitter Mady Saris are closing in on massive milestones. They've started a majority of the matches in their career, proving to be a reliable duo for IU.
• Haworth passed the 3,000-assist threshold - the 8th in program history to do so - and is now chasing 4,000 assists. Along the way, she is hoping to pass the all-time aces mark of 197. She's got 173 for her career, needing just 25 in 25 remaining regular season matches.
• Saris is looking to become the 20th member of the 1,000-kill club at Indiana. She has 915 for her career, just 85 away from crossing the threshold. Breana Edwards (2018-21) is the only other player under head coach Steve Aird to hit the mark.

• The Cougars picked up a pair of victories against Miami (Ohio) and Evansville to start their campaign. This will be the third time in the past four years that these programs meet.

Southern Indiana (2-4, 0-0 OVC)
