BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Outstanding passing and great distribution was key for the Indiana Volleyball team (5-2, 0-0) as it took care of Southern Indiana in straight sets (25-19, 28-26, 25-19) on Friday (Sept. 13) evening at Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers, who beat Chicago State earlier in the day, finished off a 2-0 start to the Indiana Invitational.
Senior setter Camryn Haworth set a balanced attack in the win, dishing out 38 assists to five different players. All five of IU's primary attackers had at least five kills, led by a match-high 14 from junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles. On her birthday, freshman middle blocker Ella Boersema had a career-high nine kills.
The Hoosiers continue to struggle from the service line, a trend that's continued into week three. Despite a season-high 16 service errors, IU put Southern Indiana under pressure in the final two sets. The visitors had 19 attacking errors, 13 of those unforced. Boersema had a hand in all six blocks for the Hoosiers.
In the two victories Friday, senior outside hitter Mady Saris continued her hot start to the season. The Canadian attacker hit over .400 in both games, combining for 23 kills in a pair of wins. Junior opposite Avry Tatum handled less of a load offensively but is hitting .374 on the season after combining for 16 kills in two matches Friday.
The final game of the Indiana Invitational for the hosts will pair them with a talented Ball State squad on Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon at 4:00 PM. Ball State has a win over James Madison on the young season and played top-10 foes Kentucky and Penn State to tight finishes. IU will go for its first 6-2 start in five years tomorrow.
