BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In a match that started Friday night and ended Saturday morning (Sept. 20-21), a scrutinized penalty decision was the difference in the Indiana men's soccer 1-0 defeat to No. 21-ranked Maryland on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
IU (2-3-3, 1-1-0 B1G) once again outshot its opponent, with 16 attempts to Maryland's 14, and felt unlucky to not convert. The Terrapins (4-1-3, 2-0-0 B1G) were able to see the match through after a 40th-minute penalty conversion.
The match kicked off at 7 p.m. ET Friday night with 2,989 spectators in attendance. In the 70th minute, lightning in the area forced the players off the field. As the inclement weather persisted, officials elected to play the final 20 minutes at 10 a.m. ET the following morning.
KEY MOMENTS
• 27' – Senior forward Samuel Sarver charged towards the top of the box and played senior forward Tommy Mihalic into a one-on-one situation on the left side. Mihalic cut inside on his marker and fired a shot towards the back post, forcing a diving save by Maryland freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack.
• 40' – Maryland junior forward Colin Griffith earned a penalty, going down in the box. The sequence was reviewed but could not be overturned. Sophomore midfielder Leon Koehl stepped to the spot and converted into the bottom right corner.
• 68' – Maryland junior forward Sadam Masereka sped past the Indiana back-line in transition into a one-on-one with senior goalkeeper JT Harms, but the IU keeper came off his line with perfect timing to push Masereka's shot away.
• 70' – Lightning in the area paused the match during a Maryland corner. Play resumed at 10 a.m. the next morning as the delay lasted approximately 13 hours, 20 minutes.
• 90' – Indiana dominated the run of play in Saturday's 20-minute segment, creating four shots and four corner kicks. In the 88th minute, Sarver had a chance with the keeper off his line, but Maryland's man was able to get back just in time to make a kick save.
