BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Former Indiana women's soccer head coach Mick Lyon who led the Hoosiers for 11 seasons, passed away on Sunday at the age of 61.
Lyon was named the head coach of the women's soccer program at Indiana on June 18, 2002, a post he held until 2012. He came to Indiana after serving as head coach at the University of Evansville for nine seasons following a stellar playing career with the Purple Aces.
He mentored five First Team All-Big Ten players and two NSCAA All-Region players during his 11 years as head coach of the Hoosiers. His best season came in 2007, when IU posted a 13-7-3 mark and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The 2009 season saw the Hoosiers set a then-school record by reeling off six straight wins to open the season, including a 2-1 overtime win against No. 6 Florida at Bill Armstrong Stadium - the highest ranked opponent the Hoosiers have ever defeated.
The native of Lincolnshire, England recruited Orianica Velasquez from Columbia. She would become the first IUWS player to compete in the World Cup (2011) and the Olympics (2012).
